Gr. 5-7. Anderson and Ancona's second collaborative photo-essay spotlights three individuals, "earth keepers," whose daily lives are dedicated to restoring the earth and protecting wildlife. Nancy Berstein of the Clearwater organization educates New Yorkers about water pollution and restoration of waterways through hands-on experiences aboard the Hudson River schooner Clearwater. Malinda Futrell helped create the Sixth Street and Avenue B Garden, an oasis in New York City. Lynn Rogers, a wildlife biologist who has studied black bears for 22 years, is devoted to animal research and the wilderness. Like Nancy and Malinda, he believes in the interconnectedness of all living things. The book makes it quite clear that these earth keepers are ordinary people who have chosen to make a difference and that to do so is both important and satisfying. Ancona's photographs capture the pleasure of the environmentalists as they go about their work and beautifully complement Anderson's earnest, but never preachy text.
