This is a very concise, comprehensive book on Earth ... perfect for its intended audience!,
This review is from: Earth (True Books: Space) (Paperback)
The population on Earth is growing all the time and is home to an astounding 6.6 billion people. In our solar system our planet is the only one that is habitable and teeming with many different types of life forms. At one point in time astronomers felt that a distant planet called Gliese 581 c would be able to support life, but later discovered that it would be hot for that purpose. Of course astronomers are always in search of new planets hoping there is life out there somewhere. Back to Earth . . . you may live on this planet, but just how much do you know about it?
Earth, the "Blue Planet," is one of eight planets in our solar system (Pluto's status was changed to that of a dwarf planet in 2006). It takes Earth 365 days, or one year to orbit or go around the sun. The time frame in which it spins on its axis, "an imaginary line running from north to south through the center of a planet or a moon," is four minutes less than 24 hours. If you lined up all the planets, Earth would seem small by comparison at only 7,926 miles in diameter. In this book you will also find out about the conditions needed to support life, learn about global warming, find out what the planet is actually made up of, learn about its three layers (crust, mantle and core), and learn more about the moon, a bit about satellites and moon missions. Are you really a reader? If so, you will find two sentences in front of the book. Only one is true and if you're sharp you'll find the answer! This book is very concise, comprehensive and perfect for the intended audience. It is colorful and has numerous photographs, fun facts scattered throughout the book, informative sidebars, a statistics page, a short time line, important words, an index and additional recommended books and web sites to explore. Did you know that there is a Meteor Crater in Arizona that could hold a "50-story building . . . and not reach the top?" There is a photograph of the crater in this book!
