Product Description

The Depths Optical Vibe Machine
The Depths Optical Vibe Machine

The Depths is EarthQuaker's take on the classic optical vibe circuit. It creates a lush, phasing pulse which delivers a three-dimensional swirling sound. The Depths has been optimized to work well with all types of instrument, pickup types and to play well with dirt. With its “Voice” and “Throb” controls, The Depths can achieve sounds from thin and subtle to warm and deep and everything in between. The “Intensity” and “Rate” will go from a smooth, ultra-slow warble all the way to speedy, sharp bursts allowing you to get more than just the classic vibe sounds. The “Level” will allow you to boost the signal well above unity to make up for any perceived volume loss commonly found in vibe pedals. In addition to all that, The Depths can be powered by 9v for warmer tones or up to 18v for a stiffer tone with more headroom and sparkle.

Measures 4 5/8″ x 2 1/2″ x 2.25″ with knobs. Top mounted jacks

Analog, true bypass and handade one at a time in Akron, Ohio.

Power Requirements

A standard regulated 9-18 volt DC power supply with a negative center 2.1mm barrel. We do not recommend any adapter that isn’t designed for musical instruments. Do not run at higher voltages! Powering at 9v gives a warmer and more natural sound, 18v will be stronger with more headroom and “sparkle.” Does not use batteries. Current draw is 35ma.

Warranty

EarthQuaker Devices will repair or replace any defective device for the life of the product. Warranty does not apply to the enclosure, graphics, knobs, hardware or any devices that are deliberately destroyed or modified by anyone other than EarthQuaker Devices.

Controls
  • Voice: Dials in the overall sound. Turn it clockwise for a fuller sound with more lows, bring it back for a thinner, more midrange focused tone.
  • Throb: This controls the low end pulse. It may not be immediately evident on the bridge pickup, but switch to the neck or add some dirt and it comes alive. All the way up for more throb, dial it back for less. Works best when the “Voice” is set to a warmer tone.
  • Intensity: This controls how subtle or intense the overall effect is. Counter clockwise from noon are the more subtle, classic sounds. Clockwise from noon are the more drastic and intense sounds.
  • Rate: Controls the speed of the effect. Counterclockwise for slow, clockwise for fast.
  • Level: Controls the volume of the effect. Unity is around 1 O’clock, everything above that is boost.

I've been playing Jazz & Fusion guitar for 5 years and this is my favorite pedal. I had 3 other Univibe pedals like the "Fulltone Deja Vibe" that I got at a flea market, which is descent but I think "The Depths" produced a better tone, so I sold my Dejavibe. The other one was "Voodoo Lab Microvibe" this was good but I couldn't get a faster speed rate than the one it offered. Plus the one I used the most before I got "The Depths" was the "MOEN Shaky Jimi Vibe" which has a lot of vibe for the price I got it on Amazon.
If you're on a tight budget than I recommend "Shaky Jimi Vibe" since it also has a "Chorus" to "Vibe" switch as well. However if you save enough money and want a larger variety of tone; where you want the sound of David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, & Robin Trower tone; than the "Earthquaker The Depths" would definitely be one of your favorite guitar pedals, like it is mine.

I bought this because I needed a small footprint Univibe type effect on a new board I was building. I also have an MJM 60's vibe, which is supposed to be an authentic Univibe circuit.

I can get pretty close to the MJM with The Depths. I found with the Voice knob all the way to the down and the Throb at noon, it was nearly identical, but with a bit more high end bite. Oddly, EQD recommendation for a "classic vibe" setting sounded NOTHING like the MJM. The Depths has a bit more hi-fi sound that can help cut through a mix, where the MJM has a more relaxed and mellow tone. The Depths can produce a much more intense effects using the various knobs, and has a lot more output volume. The Depths also does not have the "vibe" switch like a UniVibe. It is chorus only (does anyone really use a UniVibe in "vibe" mode?)

If you are looking for authentic UniVibe tone, I think the Depths can get pretty darn close. If you are looking for a more hi-fi, modern take on the UniVibe, with more intensity options, more control, and more output, then give this pedal is certainly a winner.

I've tried several vibe pedals, including the original univibe, which is too big/heavy for a small club pedal board. The Depths is wonderful, just enough knobs to let you tweak the sound to your liking, and great, great tone. Played Little Wing the first gig I tried this and got beautiful tone. This will stay on board for a while.

Man these guys are freaking awesome. Their pedals are incredible. Downright honest and reliable to work with. I'm still trying to make sense of these pedals. ;)
