Book Description

June 20, 2012 8 and up
Every kid worries about making friends at a new school, but when nine-year-old Bud accidentally catches the wrong bus and finds himself launched into deep space, new friends are the least of his problems! At Cosmos Academy, Bud learns that Earthlings are the most feared creatures in the galaxy, and even Earth's location has been hidden! With the help of his new friend, Gort, Bud goes undercover as a Tenarian exchange student. Unfortunately that means everyone thinks he's a pro at anti-gravity Zero-Ball (even though he's really only a pro at watching sports). And with paranoid Principal Lepton threat ening to expel any Earthlings (into outer space) and only Gort's hacked Blip computer to help them determine Earth's co-ordinates, will Bud ever find his way home?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-7-This graphic novel takes the school story into outer space with humor, a bit of action, and a cast of unusual characters. Fish-out-of-water Bud catches the wrong bus and ends up far, far from home at Cosmos Academy, where Earthlings are not welcome. He befriends lime-green alien Gort, who shows him the ropes of the school. Posing as a Tenarian, Bud must figure out how to get back to his home planet while avoiding the wrath of Principal Lepton, a Lanthornoid fearful of Earthlings. The tone of the book stays on the lighter side while still touching on themes of fitting in and fear of the unknown. Bud's quest to return to Earth is full of secrecy, adding a splash of tension to the story. The book looks great, with vibrant, full-color artwork rendered in pencil drawings that have been digitally inked and colored. The panel layouts are basic and clear, adding to the inviting package. Fans of UFOs and aliens will enjoy this one.-Travis Jonker, Wayland Union Schools, MIα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. More About the Author

Raised by a pack of wild geese, Mark learned to fly at an early age. No? How about - raised by gophers Mark learned to dig extremely fast at a young age. No matter the truth of those first statements I can say that I grew up near St. Paul Minnesota and ended up graduating from The University of Wisconsin, Madison. I enjoyed studying ancient art history, comparative literature and Chinese, but ended up with a BFA focused on design. I proceeded to work in politics, advertising and graphic design in Madison until I transferred myself to Los Angeles where I worked in graphic design, motion graphics, video games, animation for TV and film and created several TV shows that never saw the light of day or even the glow of a TV. I later attend the MFA program in animation at UCLA where I made The Thing with No Head. The best animated short ever made. Ever. OK. That's subjective.

I ended up working as an art director for Sony Online, a new media creative director for Pearson Television and a current production manager for Walt Disney TV Animation.

Along the way I was writing and illustrating books. Sending them out and enjoying the resulting letters that varied between condemnation 'you should never work in children's books' to, 'send more samples'.

In 2007 a small publisher in Long Beach published several of my comic books. In 2009, Tricycle Press published The Book That Eats People, which I illustrated and since then I have been fortunate enough to work on 7 additional books including The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot from Random House, Earthling!, a graphic novel for readers 8 and up from Chronicle Books and So You Want To Catch Bigfoot from Candlewick Press.

My favorite genres are science fiction, horror and humor. Or a combination of all three.

And oddly enough, geese didn't teach me to fly. It was the gophers that taught me that. Who'd a guessed!?

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Graphic Novel - Great Story! August 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bud got on the wrong bus. Not a big deal right? Right. That is, if that bus doesn't go into deep space to a school that is full of aliens that hate Earthlings! Bud got on that kind of bus. The kind with the aliens. He meets Gort McGortgort, another kid/an alien, who becomes his guide. Gort tells Bud that he can't tell ANYONE he is an Earthling because Earthlings are feared and despised (apparently all the aliens think Earthlings want to kidnap them). Gort and Bud become friends even though Bud is an Earthling. Gort does his best to get Bud home, but bad (and somehow completely funny) things keep happening! Will Bud ever get home?

I have been waiting and waiting for this book to come out! I first read about it on Mr. Fearing's blog. I really like Mr. Fearing's illustrations and was happy to find out he was writing a graphic novel. I was not disappointed! I really did "laugh out loud" when reading this book! It was really likeable and hilarious! I really liked Bud and Gort. They were both good friends, nice and cool. I thought the plot was hysterical - Earthlings being feared and an Earth boy being trapped as the "new kid" in school. Mr. Fearing's illustrations and story really make this an awesome graphic novel. I thought "Earthling!" did really well as a graphic novel because it was cool to see how all the aliens looked and the pictures really added to the whole story. I recommend this graphic novel to kids 8+ and young advanced readers because it is a longer graphic novel that actually has a good, long story that you can really get into.

5.0 out of 5 stars out-of-this-world awesomeness! July 27, 2012
Format:Paperback
When I got a copy of Earthling! by Mark Fearing I read it straight away and have already reread the book a couple times. It is the sort of book I wish had been around when I was a kid. I would have become a reader much sooner if it was! The book is exciting, easy to follow, funny, clever, and something people of many ages can enjoy. I highly recommend this graphic novel! One of the best I have come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a 2nd Grader April 16, 2013
Format:Paperback
My 2nd grade son read this book from cover to cover. Often reading time can in our house be a struggle, but not while he was reading Earthling! He was so proud of himself when he finished. We immediately checked to see if Mark Fearing had written any other graphic novels. Sadly, not yet. We're anxiously awaiting a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, imaginative sci-fi adventure for kids December 13, 2012
Format:Paperback
"Earthling!"
Written & Illustrated by Mark Fearing
(Chronicle Books, 2012)

This was a fun, fast-paced kid's graphic novel about a young Earth boy who accidentally gets on the wrong school bus -- this bus goes to a different galaxy, not a different building. Stranded a bazillion light years from home, he has to figure out how to get back and, as it turns out, he has to save planet Earth as well. It's a fun, lighthearted book that lots of kids can enjoy -- nothing really creepy or objectionable in terms of sex or violence... Just a giddy, imaginative romp, hanging out with some nice kids on the other side of the universe. Recommended! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain childrens' book reviews)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Earthling November 16, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first read about this book in the New York Times Book Review and decided to get it for my eleven year old son. When it arrived I handed it to him and waited. I asked a little while later how the book was and he said "I finished it. It was 'boss'". Boss to an eleven year old is the best you can get. Once I was finally allowed to look at it--the newness has worn off--I decided to read it. It's a great book. The illustrations and the narrative are very compelling and smooth. I understand why my son was so focused and wanted to read it all in one shot. I would recommend it to any middle schooler who is looking for a fun read and an adult looking for a way to capture a child's attention with a book.
