Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Wrigley (Lives of the Animals, 2003) has been offering up well-crafted, articulate and largely autobiographical free verse since the 1970s, often reflecting his Great Plains roots or his longtime residence among the woods of northern Idaho. This ample career-spanning selection shows how little the essence of his carefully wrought poems appears to have changed: the notion that "the body's one life, constant, expansive, simultaneous" informs all his observations and invocations, cast, often, into sinuously subordinated, easy-to-follow sentences. Wrigley's personality remains a granite constant even as his attention wanders—from the distant past to the near future, from his parents to cottonmouth snakes, from a confident mare in spring to a "Sad Moose": "Each day for a week I've watched him,/ the ribs defined into claws." Wrigley's quiet respect for nonhuman nature and his consistent interest in the meaning of sex, paternity and literary inheritance unify his detailed and trustworthy, if rarely pyrotechnic, work, in which "Living is a slow dance you know/ you're dreaming, but the chill at your neck/ is real." 4.0 out of 5 stars The sea and its enormous restraint, February 21, 2010
This review is from: Earthly Meditations: New and Selected Poems (Poets, Penguin) (Paperback)
He does the things that you can't learn in school. I understand what he means when he says, "I mean the sea and its enormous restraint," but I can't explain how I understand. He has found some angle in the words that we recognize. I give him less than five stars because I believe that he is deliberately modest, and has no interest in being Auden, or Eliot, or anything but what he is. That's enough for him and enough for me. These are only, and deliberately, "earthly meditations." The style isn't always the man, but this time it is. Fine poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Value for the Kindle, December 29, 2010

I'm trying to recreate my paper library into a Kindle one, and I was pleased to see two of Wrigley's previous books offered at affordable prices. They are easy to navigate with a live Table of Contents. I commend the publisher for offering his work for Kindle and for offering it at a lower price. I hope they add some of his earliest work as well.
