For those who do not know about Y&T, you really need to take the time to see why this band from the 80's continues to play all around the world to the musical enjoyment of fans of hard rock music. Their recent release, Facemelter, has songs that are as strong as the ones from their first albums. Dave Meneketti is a beast on lead guitar and lead vocals. Go see this band if you can- you will not be disappointed.

As for this set, you get basically their entire catalog from A&M Records. One can argue that A&M did the band a disservice by not providing them with more support. With that said, this collection is a great way to automatically build your Y&T collection. My guess is that A&M is trying to capitalize on the ongoing success of Y&T today.

You will get 7 albums spread over 4 discs.

Disc 1 EARTHSHAKER (1981) and BLACK TIGER (1982) are considered by most fans to be their best albums- classics and staples of my hard rock play list. Songs like Hurricane, Open Fire, Black Tiger, I Believe In You, etc. Great music that holds the test of time.

Disc 2 MEANSTREAK (1983) and IN ROCK WE TRUST (1984) gave a little shift in their sound but gave fans some concert staples that still are played today like Mean Streak, Midnight in Tokyo, Lipstick and Leather, etc.

Disc 3 OPEN FIRE (1985) and DOWN FOR THE COUNT -SIDE 1 original album (1985) plus a couple from IN ROCK WE TRUST- The live OPEN FIRE disc is great and included Sumertime Girls first which was their biggest AOR hit.

Disc 4 DOWN FOR THE COUNT -original side 2 plus the BBC Friday Rock Show Live- which is somewhat rare and is another slice of great live music.

The booklet is light on history but such is life. Thanks to the Y&T site, you can learn all you need to know.

Y&T Rocks!

A thoroughly worthwhile release.

Y&T fans who have been frustrated through the years, by the difficulty in finding their A&M catalog on CD at reasonable prices, now have some cause to celebrate, as the import 4 CD boxed set Earthquake: The A&M Years 1981-1985 (2013) contains the albums Earthshaker (1981), Black Tiger (1982), Mean Streak (1983), In Rock We Trust (1984), Open Five Live (1985), and Down For the Count (1985), as well as tracks from Live On The Friday Rock Show. This release provides a convenient, and relatively economical way, to add a huge of chunk of melodic hard rock to your collection.

Lead by guitarist Dave Meniketti, Oakland based rockers Y&T, gained popularity in the early 80's, and were part of the explosion of heavy metal during that decade. Incorporating a bit more blues and melodic elements, Y&T's music was fueled by Meniketti's emotional vocals, fiery guitar, and cocky attitude. During what were the band's glory years, the lineup remained constant, with Meniketti, bass player Phil Kennemore, drummer Leonard Haze, and guitarist Joey Alves.

After releasing two albums as Yesterday and Today on London Records, the band changed their name to Y&T, and released Earthshaker as their debut on A&M Records. The band built momentum and developed a signature sound on Black Tiger, and Mean Streak, peaking with In Rock We Trust, their best selling album to date. Y&T's most successful single "Summertime Girls", came on Open Fire, the last release before the band experienced a lineup change. Through these years, Y&T worked damn hard, putting blood and sweat into their music. They produced some memorable and classic hard rock, but they never achieved the mega-success, that some other west coast bands attained.

When the CD era arrived, Y&T fans waited for their A&M catalog to be released, but for various reasons, it did not happen. Co-founded by Herb Alpert, A&M had similar issues with many of their artists, which ironically included Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. For Y&T, the wait stretched on for many years, with their A&M albums available only as high priced imports. Now finally, Earthquake fills a void that has existed for much too long. There is no mention of remastering, which unfortunately is all too prevalent these days, but at least the music is now finally available to the masses. The set is going for over $30, but that is still much less expensive, than buying the individual releases.

There's got to be a better way to get the Yesterday & Today and Struck Down albums into the hands of fans. If A&M couldn't get the rights, then the band needs to reissue them as I've heard they did via their website in a limited fashion some time ago.

Even if until now you've always been about Earthshaker, Black Tiger, and Mean Streak as I was - this is still a must buy, no brainer purchase. For a reasonable price you get tons of great Meniketti.

Y&T has been one of my favorite bands since 80's!
I even have their earlier 70's albums. This is a
good place to start with some of their best albums!
Dave Meinketti is one of the greatest guitarist and
vocalist of all time! the songwriter is always great
and one of those bands that should've been bigger.
Black Tiger is a monster album every hard rock fan
should have in the collection but really all their
albums should be in your collection! if your a real rocker!

Essential purchase for any Rock/Hard Rock/ Hair Metal (though I hate that term)/Classic Rock fan. Y & T were one of THE best and most under appreciated rock acts in the 80's. This set of their key releases on A&M is spectacular and well worth up to $50. Its going much cheaper. I mean this is 7 CD's worth of material. No one has an excuse not to grab this. These are the bands best albums, though i did enjoy the Geffen years stuff as well (Contagious and Ten), these are the main courses for the bands career.

If you are searching Y&T you know what they are all about anyway. Just great Guitar driven rock, some excellent, quality ballads and some smokin' Guitar solo's by Meniketti. The best of this lot is a tough call, their first 4 albums were great, The live set (Open Fire) is excellent, but the great BBC show was a special surprise add on. Probably the worst is 'Down for the Count', though it still has some quality tracks. Great music and memories lie in this set.

In short, be glad you came across this package, as I was. Though these albums have been reissued, when I got this a few years ago these albums domestically were pretty hard to find. Though this is an import, it is readily available and affordable. in fact, a steal. But if you haven't purchased these classics, now is the time.

Side Note:
ONLY pet peeve to this set, for me, is that someone in the editors office doesn't have an eye or is just plain stupid.. They have 'Rock and Rolls Gonna Save The World' as the 10th track on Mean Streak instead of the 1st track on 'In Rock We Trust' where it belongs, on the back artwork track listing. Also, the front cover doesn't mention 'Open Fire' with the other album titles, though it is clearly pictured on the back and is included. Things like this really bother me. This is a career spanning retrospective and they should have caught these clear errors. That's just plain messy and cheapens it a tad. Annoys me for some reason. I mean how many eyes saw this before it was released and still no one caught either thing?
But that doesn't take away from anything within. Just is ridiculous in my opinion.

100% Buy.

So happy to have a true "best of" Y&T collection again. Not the type of band you want to settle for a greatest hits collection on. The A&M years really give you the best of one of the most under appreciated bands of their generation.
