Product Description

The Earthquaker Devices Hoof Fuzz Pedal is a stunning fuzz box. Earthquaker Devices has really hit the nail on the head with this pedal. Featuring a germanium/silicon hybrid layout that is loosely modeled after an old army green Russian Big Muff only tighter and cleaner, the Hoof Fuzz is a great choice if you are looking for a compact pedal board-friendly fuzz box that can make your current guitar amp combo sing with fuzzy goodness.. The knob layout of the Hoof Fuzz is pretty simple, featuring Tone, Fuzz, Level and the newly added Shift knobs. The Shift knob controls the frequency response of the tone control. Essentially, when the shift is rotated clockwise on the EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Fuzz Pedal, it give you that scooped mids metal tone and when spun the other way, the mids return. The shift knob also has a center detente at 12 o'clock which, when centered, makes this version of the Hoof Fuzz sound like the old version that lacked the Shift knob. With a range of fuzz sound that can take you anywhere from Smashing Pumpkins to Sonic Youth and back, the EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Fuzz Pedal is a winner.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Seth Balmore on July 19, 2013
First, the current picture differs from the model Earthquaker is currently selling. The one I received is the same except it has standard boutique-style pinched knobs.

My interest in the Hoof came because I love the USA Big Muff, but I'm not a fan of it's large size and scooped mids. So in looking for a replacement I found that the Hoof solves both of those problems. The Hoof is advertised as a Russian Muff Clone, but I found it to be identical to my USA Big Muff. The only difference is that the Hoof is lacking the Muff's obnoxious low end response (which just muddies up a rock mix anyway). So I consider that an improvement.

In addition to dropping the useless bass frequencies, the shift knob on the Hoof lets me dial in how much mid-frequencies I want, so I'm finally able to cut through the mix. At the end of the day the hoof is just a Big Muff with an extra knob. If you're not a fan of the Big Muff then this pedal is definitely not for you. If you love the Muff but wished it wasn't so muddy sounding then the Hoof is the perfect solution. My only gripe is that on the model I have, the input & output jacks are on the top rather than the sides.

This is a good fuzz pedal. I give it three stars because it has been difficult to gain stack with using my TS-9. This is whether placed before or after in the chain. If the level on the Hoof fuzz is ever past 12 o clock in either position, a noise gate is in order. Not that big of a deal depending on how you plan to integrate the pedal into your setup. Again, it's a good fuzz pedal.

From a little fuzz to full on face melting goodness, this pedal sounds absolutely amazing. I am currently driving with a full tone mofset and it absolutely kills.
