Book Description

January 3, 2002 10 and up5 and up
Earthquakes range in intensity from slight vibrations unfelt by humankind to gigantic waves capable of causing mass destruction. Earthquakes can damage the earth's surface, destroy man-made structures, and end human life. Understanding earthquake conditions enables humans to predict earthquakes with the hopes of lessening death and destruction in the next occurrence.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Narrow in scope, these easy-to-read books are reasonable additions to heavily used sections of the 551s. They discuss the causes, effects, and power of the featured catastrophes, as well as methods of predicting them, safety measures, and famous disasters of their kind. Each two-page spread contains a photograph, map, or chart; nearly all are in color and many, especially in Earthquakes, are full-page. Unfortunately, they're more decorative than informative. Dorothy Souza's Hurricanes (1994) and Sally Walker's Earthquakes (1995, both Carolrhoda), Seymour Simon's attractive Earthquakes (Morrow, 1991), and Patricia Lauber's powerful Hurricanes (Scholastic, 1996) are all better choices.
