From School Library Journal
Grade 2–4—These introductory titles follow a standard format of brief chapters of basic information with clear, relevant illustrations (mainly color photos) on every spread. The books begin with lists of words to identify in the text. The first title introduces "Planet Parts," "Moving Pieces," "Mountains, Cracks, and Holes," and "Making New Crust." The second one discusses how fossils are formed, as well as finding and studying them. The third title defines different types of rocks and discusses the rock cycle. The colorful layout is appealing. These titles are comparable to those in the "Earth Rocks!" series (Rosen) and will complement existing collections or be a good starting point for young readers.—Michael Giller, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, Greenville

From Booklist
This volume from the Early Bird Earth Science series introduces the earth's crust. Four chapters discuss the planet's overall structure, plate tectonics, changes in the crust, and features such as mountains, faults, and volcanoes. At the front of the book, a feature called "Be a Word Detective" lists words (geologists, magma) that might be difficult and suggests checking the glossary as needed. With short sentences, generously spaced lines, and large type, the text has an inviting look for young readers. The colorful illustrations include several clear diagrams and maps as well as many captioned photos. The book concludes with a note to adults, a glossary, and lists of recommended books and Web sites. A clearly written, accessible introduction.. Carolyn Phelan
