The papers represent a synopsis of the current thinking behind a number of large, mostly unsolved, problems such as the detailed mechanism whereby the Earth's magnetic field is maintained, the question of the physical and chemical nature of the core mantle boundary (CMB), and the nature of the convection in the mantle that drives the surface tectonic plates.
