5.0 out of 5 stars You'll want all the books in this series
I went to Taos and toured some of the "Earth Ship" houses, and they were wonderful. I bought the books there and read them cover to cover (on the way home). These books are full of good, practical, information. If you have access to old tires, empty cans, clay mud, you could build your own house. I haven't done a house yet, but I've done some other...

3.0 out of 5 stars a great coffee room book
good topic for discussion around a break room or sitting lounge. not extremely detailed on mechanics of an Earthship house (guess you have to buy a blueprint or get a contractor). well worth it if you want to be more environmentally involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Building Method Using Car Tires and Aluminum Cans, October 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
These books are way ahead of their time. The author first describes the idea of a self-contained "earthship" -- a home that provides for it's own power, sewage, food and water needs. He then talks about the structure, the ideas behind it, and why it works. The rest of the book is all about how to actually build one. Don't pass this up, once you get the idea in your head, you'll want to build one of your own!

5.0 out of 5 stars a new way of living for the health of our planet, May 22, 1999
This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This book could change the world. Yes, a sweeping claim but just check it out if you are interested in living in harmony with the earth. Imagine living in a home you built yourself of materials all in overabundance in the states. Imagine never having to pay another utility bill! This book has it all baby! I'd like to build the world an earthship. A revolutionary idea for our screwy times> BUY IT READ IT GET IT DO IT!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start your Energy Conservation Education, August 11, 2006

I've read the two volume Michael Reynolds "Earthship" Duo as a start to my new project to eventually design and build an energy independent and eco friendly retirement home. I'm not sure yet that I want a "composting toilet", but I do want to be educated about the entire process. This is the classic basic, The Earthship. It's a good way to start changing your mind set. How much hot water do I really need to be happy? Well organized and passionately written by someone who has dedicated a lot of thought to living responsibly on Mother Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, December 26, 2007
This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Wonderful. Easy to read and understand (maybe a little too easy sometimes, but that's OK). We are preparing to build using this book, and we are really excited by the possiblities. I would reccomend this book (and have) to anyone interested in really understanding sustainable living. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Better Way of Living, February 18, 2008
This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This book and the rest of the books in this series are the perfect recipe for living in harmony with the Earth. Reducing our carbon footprint is the challenge for this generation and this book series shows you how to do it - step by step. It's wonderful for the do-it-yourselfer and presents it in an easy-to-follow guide that gives even a novice the confidence that he/she can do it, too! I saw Earthships on several documentaries on Discovery channel and I am impressed by just how little energy they need to sustain themselves and how logical they are designed. I devoured this book and parts II and III as well. I can't recommend this series enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Earthship: How to Build your own (Earthship), August 8, 2007
This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This is a great "how to do it yourself" book. It was published in 1991, so I wish it had updated information, but the concept is great.

It is VERY interesting to those of you wishing to build a home off the grid, and VERY insulated.

Interesting and eye opening book on what should be a wide-spread trend already. Too bad it isn't. There were a few gaps in the information, but other than that, it was clear and easy to understand. I'm going for Vol. 2!

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative but could have used more/better pictures., August 3, 2008
This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This book was informative, and it pretty much gave me all the information I wanted to know about how to build an earthship, but the pictures it uses is mostly hand drawn which still leaves a lot to your imagination. I wanted to see color pictures or at least real life black/white pictures that show me different layouts, designs, and other options for building one. Keep the hand drawn ones but add more that show off the idea. Also it seems that for me to even build one requires a lot of money and a lot of paper work with the state. It was a great book but in my mind it didn't make the possibility of me ever owning one for an affordable price any more realistic. I love the idea though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!, October 23, 2010

This review is from: Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I absolutely loved this book, and if you are interested in breaking away from the confines of the savings and loan based housing market, you will too! The only thing I can really say negative about this book is that it was not longer! Michael Reynolds could have made this a lot more detailed which would have been a big help because there are some concepts of the Earthship design that are still a bit fuzzy in my mind. Other than the slight brevity of this manual, this is a fantastic read for anyone interested in the alternative, ecologically-sound lifestyle. It really got my mind running in the direction of discerning what I hope to achieve in my housing goals, and made me really want to try this unique architecture concept myself.
