If I could give this mower 10 stars I would. I live on a sloping, uneven lot in Colorado, with some steep pitches. As a 65 year old woman, I wanted the lightest possible mower with no maintenance hassle. Battery operated or gasoline engine mowers would be too heavy. I wheel this around like a toy, often one handed as I brush shrubs or flowers out of the way. It does a beautiful job on the front lawn. But I also put it to the acid test yesterday, and cut the rough area on the steep back of my property. This mower went through 16 to 20 inch high grass and weeds (slowly so it would mulch thoroughly), shredded a large sprinkler head (ugh!) and cut through juniper branches. It never stopped, and only slowed a little when I hit a really big pile of viney weeds to mulch through. I ran it on the highest setting, but it was great to be able to lower it with a quick and easy touch when I wanted to. It's very easy to stop and start. What a wonderful change from the pull to start gas mower! Also, it never clogged no matter what I put under it, just mulched this large amount of organic matter into particles so small they aren't visible. Be aware if you buy it that a cord does not come with it. Also, delivery from The Outdoor Store/Dixie Sales was quick: ordered May 30 pm and received June 4 am. July 14, 2009 update: I didn't know an amp from a watt when I bought this. At first I used a 16 gauge 100 foot extension cord I had for Christmas tree lights. It seemed to run OK, but I could have damaged the motor. So just got the Woods 2885 Yellow Jacket 100-Foot 12/3 SJTW Yellow 15 Amp/125 Volt Rated Outdoor Extension Cord with PowerLite PlugRated Outdoor Extension Cord with PowerLite Plug and used it for the first time last night. With a 15 amp rating it has plenty of power for this 12 amp mower. It was absolutely no more difficult to move around, and the Alert Stamping 7000WR Pro-Reel Cord Carrier is great for tidy storage, easy to wind and unwind. Highly recommend both these products, too.

Update September 2011: This machine is still going strong. I have purchased new blades which are so inexpensive, easy to install, and last most or all of a season. My lawn is quite visibly healthier, very lush like a green carpet. I don't dethatch nor aerate it, just mow once a week. I believe leaving the mulched grass on the lawn in addition to mulched leaves in the fall has made a big difference. I think the mulching action may pull up and pulverize dead grass and debris to the point that it never forms thatch. I use a winterizer fertilizer on it in late October, and Weed and Feed once a year to keep the weeds down.

Also an update re cord management which I got from another reviewer: Find the middle of the cord, mark it with a marking pen or zip tie, and wind the cord from the middle. Much quicker!

I purchased my 1st single family home with a good size back yard late last summer. I had the intention of being green when purchasing a reel mower, but the drawbacks outweighed the benefits. My yard is uneven and given the different surface type and shape of the mower, it would roll into the valleys and actually scalp the lawn in areas. As the grass thickened, it becomes more difficult to mow through. I was unable to locate a grass catcher locally for my mower and it left clumps of long grass on top of the lawn. I always had to rake before it rained or else the dog would track in long bits of wet grass. I finally tossed in the towel and purchased this after reading the reviews on the 50018 model. The price was enticing but the reviews were also good. The day I received my mower, I quickly attached the handle and was off and mowing. Starts quickly and runs quieter than a gas mower. No oil, no gas, no smells to deal with. Easy to push through thick grass. If you mow away from the power source, the cord is easy to deal with. The mulching feature did away with the debris laying on top of the lawn. Adjusting the height was easier than the reel mower. Just pop the lever and move it to the appropriate height in one step instead of two. I am actally anticipating the next mowing instead of dreading it. In my opinion, reel mowers are great if you have a small, level area to maintain. I am so happy I purchase this mower.

I've had the Earthwise #50118 for about a month. It is easy to use, cuts well and is reasonably quiet. I really
like the simple, one-step height adjustment. It's my first corded mower and it takes a little bit of getting
used to maneuvering with the extension cord, but it's not really a problem. Stopping and starting is a breeze.
There are no gas fumes or gas cans to be bothered with. I'm pleased.

We had read the reviews of the Earthwise 18-inch #50018 ... and couldn't tell what was different about this one.
... except the PRICE.
I'm guessing this is the updated model and it lives up to all the positive reviews of it predecessor.
The cord clip near the handle keeps it from ever coming unplugged. The automatic shut-off handle is a nice safety feature.
I'm not sure if the rear "mud flap" guard has been altered (see earlier review of the 50018) but it was no inconvenience at all. In fact, it actually helps when pulling the mower backward. It brushes against the nap of any grass that had been flattened down when going forward, so you get it on the return trip.
Easy to adjust height. Easy to clean. I'm very pleased we bought this one.

Thought I would have to hire a landscape company to keep my lawn looking halfway decent and decided to look at electric lawn mowers because I'm a woman and I live alone and I am not very mechanical or strong. I bought the Earthwise because anything smaller didn't get very good reviews; but I was impressed at the job it did. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a big mower but I needed something that would get the job done. This mower is a decent size without it being a monster and was pretty inexpensive as mowers go. I was really happy I invested in it. I don't have the largest lawn but it's big enough that I was going to need a mower to cut it. This is a great mower, it has power and does a good job without wearing me out. I actually enjoy cutting grass now and look forward to cutting it weekly. It has several height settings and a safely switch, and I am delighted and happy that I didn't hire somebody to do what isn't that hard to do myself. All of the hardware stores around were featuring the biggest models, pushing for gas motors and extremely expensive electric mowers. I'm glad I looked at what Amazon had to offer. I didn't have to go all over town looking for a small lawn mower; Amazon shipped it for free and it came right to the door.

I bought this lawnmower from Amazon in mid-April and have used it a minimum of once per week since then. One negative thing I can write about is that I cannot find a way that the cord holder works; the cord manages to come out of the holder every time I try to put it in. But I do not find this a problem because I knot the connection together like the instructions suggest, and I often hold the cord across the top of the handle while I'm mowing. The important point being that the connection is not going to come undone while mowing.

The 50118 model does not have a grass clipping collection bag. It is also somewhat confusing that it is called a mulching mower. The box it came in says "2 in 1 mulch and side discharge" however the booklet that comes with the mower says this model is not a mulcher. The booklet is for both models 50118 and 50120 and it describes a part for the 50120 called a mulching plug that you insert and it specifically says this is not available for the 50118. So the choice with the 50118 is let the cut grass fall along as you mow, or have it go out the side discharge. One of the times I used a shorter cutting length, and I could see grass clippings on the lawn. I don't think this is true mulching.

I read the reviews before I purchased the mower, and I must be lucky because it did not smell badly like several people experienced. I made sure to buy a larger guage (smaller number) extension cord because several people said Earthwise wouldn't honor their warranty if they did not use the correct cord.

It is a little harder to push than my old gas mower. But the positive parts of having this start right up, that it is quieter, and it doesn't use gas all outweigh any negatives I have experienced. Sometimes it is fun just to turn it off so I can turn it back on again and revel in the fact that I don't have to kill my shoulder and arm muscles repeatedly trying to turn it on like my old gas mower.

I really enjoy this lawn mower. There are some place that the lawn tractor just does get or do a very good job on. The Earthwise 50118 is great - quiet and turns heads of those passing by. I haven't cut the power cord yet. It takes a little getting use to the instructions on how best to cut the lawn and the cord can be a pain but it's worth it. No gas! No Oil! No tuneup! Enjoy.

I just moved into a place with a lawn for the first time in my life. After a few weeks of unpacking I decided to tackle the lawn, thinking it would take forever with the overgrown grass. I was wrong. This little mower took it all down. It's really quiet and easy to use.

After using this mower every 2 weeks for 3 months (6 times), the front right axle cracked away from the mower. There is no way to reattach this piece. I will have to order a new axle to connect the wheel to the mower again. Pretty awful craftsmanship. What a waste of money and a big disapointment. Like the old saying, the cheap end up costing you more.

So our 10 year old Toro self propelled mower finally died. While we hated having to buy a new mower we figured the least we could do is upgrade to something more environmentally friendly. We decided to go electric and then had decide whether to go corded or with rechargeable batteries. After reading some reviews of how expensive the batteries are to replace we decided to go with a corded one, plus you save on the initial purchase price because of the batteries. So then we started reading reviews of sub $200 electric mowers. We settled on the Earthwise 50118 and ordered it on Monday. We just used this mower for the first time, and it was the first cut of the season, and it was a little late for the first cut so the grass was 10-12 inches high.

This mower is GREAT!!! It basically comes fully assembled. You just have to attach the top section of the handle. We were a little worried because it isn't self propelled, but this baby is light enough that it works out to about the same amount of work as a self propelled gas powered mower. Admittedly, it is going to take us a little while to get used to making back and forth passes and not circles (because of the cord). It plowed through the foot high grass without a problem. I particularly like the ease of starting, you just hold the "dead man's" switch and it starts and runs. And it is so much quieter. We just love it!!

If there is a con, and I really wouldn't call it a con, it was that because of the size of our yard we needed a 100 foot cord, and to make sure the 12 Amp mower got enough juice we had to buy a 12 gauge thickness extension cord, which are a little expensive (about another $50). If you only need a 50 foot cord then you can get away with a 14 gauge cord, which are a lot less money. But even still, we are VERY happy with this mower.
