4.0 out of 5 stars earthworm jimbo, December 17, 2011

This review is from: Earthworm Jim 2 (Video Game)
Nobody has taken the time to mention in fine detail the differences between the Genesis and Super NES versions of Earthworm Jim 2, so here I am folks, to save the day! Now, there's not NEARLY as many differences compared to the first Earthworm Jim, but I've definitely noticed a few. Here they are.

- The accordion that Earthworm Jim plays the moment you turn on the game is horrendous in the Genesis version because he's playing the same exact note over and over again. In the Super NES version he plays a few more notes.

- Even though the backgrounds aren't drastically worse compared to the Super NES version, unfortunately for the Genesis edition the background in level one flat out STINKS! It shows a bright orange sky and that's it. It's just as disappointing as For Pete's Sake from the first EJ game. Now look at the beautiful Super NES version in comparison- it shows a blue scenary and a *gorgeous* animated waterfall.

- It should be noted that the Super NES version has more sound effects and voice work than the Genesis version this time around. When you touch the Continue point for example a voice says "Funky!" Remember how the Genesis version of the original Earthworm Jim had more sound effects overall? Not so this time around.

- Since I mentioned the Continue point, in the Super NES version the Continue point is much cooler looking because it's a sign that lights up with fireworks the moment you touch it. In the Genesis version (and this is hard to explain) the Continue point is more like a floating blue orb and when you touch it, Earthworm Jim says "Groovy" and you see a rather unspectacular and underwhelming "Continue" message appear on screen. It's quite unusual to say the least.

- In between completing the levels, you can make the cows say "Well done" FOUR different ways (a normal way, a sped up way, and two exceptionally slow and deep-voiced ways). The Genesis version ignored this humorous aspect completely.

- The music is MUCH better in the Super NES version, especially the Level 1, Lorenzo's Soil and Puppy Love stages. I'm really impressed how crystal clear and superior the music is on the Super NES version. I'm also amazed while playing the Super NES version on my 40-inch high definition TV tonight, the music was so good it was leaving me speechless. In comparison the Genesis version has music that sounds REALLY corny and similar to the NES.

- Once again, the graphics are bigger and brighter on the Super NES edition. This is always the case though, in side by side comparisons between the Super NES and the Genesis. I'm amazed how much better the cleaner and prettier version of Earthworm Jim 2 on the Super NES holds up by todays standards while the Genesis version isn't even worthy enough to be a contender.

- The framerate is just as secondrate and uninspiring in Earthworm Jim 2 as it was in the first Earthworm Jim in the Genesis edition. Once again the Super NES version smears it. Back in the day people would defend these issues by saying "Well Earthworm Jim is just cooler to play on the Genesis" or "Earthworm Jim just feels more at home on the Genesis version" but I definitely fail to understand that logic when the Genesis version of *both* Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 is clearly worse.

- The only thing I can find that's better in the Genesis version is the final stage when you're competing against Psycrow in a race to the finish. The backgrounds actually look better compared to the Super NES version. Those shiny black balls in the background are really stunning and nightmare-ish in the Genesis version. Not sure why the Super NES didn't utilize its processing power for this level.

- Oh, and another positive with the Genesis version is that they left in the button configuration screen. Not that it's really necessary to change the buttons around on the controller, but such a feature is a nice addition.

Overall, once again, just like with the original Earthworm Jim, please stick with the superior and more satisfying Super NES version of a classic game.

As a child I owned the first EWJ game, since I was little it was quite hard to beat, I had never beaten it until recently when I ordered it, after I did I found out there was a second one and I was like "MUST HAVE!"
This game is ridiculously fun, it's quite different from the first, and actually quite different from a lot of platforms of it's time. It has different types of levels instead of the same left to right side scroller, it doesn't get boring at all. It has a lot of variety and I would recommend it to anyone who loves Genesis/Mega Drive, games.
