Book Description

Newberry Honor-winning author Patricia Lauber presents a surprising look at the world of earthworms and shows how important these creatures are to a healthy ecology.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 3-6. Lauber introduces the anatomy, physiology, and life cycle of these easily recognizable invertebrates, exploring their preferred habitat (dark, cool, moist ground) and the role they play in aerating the soil and decomposing waste. Several chapters describe commercial worm production, detailing how these creatures assist farmers and return minerals to the soil. Short chapters, large print, and several full-color photos make for an attractive layout that will appeal to young readers. Unfortunately, the black-and-white insets that discuss related topics are set in a very similar typeface; their placement in the middle of several chapters may confuse some children. Based in part on the author's earlier Earthworms, Underground Farmers (Garrard, 1976), this will be useful for classes studying animals or the environment. Kay Weisman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
