I thought this book did an excellent job in outlining some of the key aspects of Islam; given the religion's importance in the world these days, it's a good idea to get a feel for its basic beliefs about the world, God, science and its fit with other religions. I thought this book achieved these goals well. Some of the chapters are written at a simpler level and others are more scholarly. I particularly liked the author/editor's look at how modern scientific discoveries fit with Islam; he also isn't afraid to tackle issues such as Islam's take on morality and the role of women in Islam. A very interesting read.

I brought this book for my adolescent niece while on my trip to India and asked her to write a review.. these are her words. And I am happy that she really liked it..

To be perfectly honest, Islam did not have any relevance in my life (though I have always believed in one supreme divine - GOD). And generally things which do not relate to your life are not of any value to you. This book has basically brought Islam to my everyday life. Through this book, I know now that God is approachable through prayers, good deeds and
by being a person whom you can look up to in reverence. God doesn't need us - we need GOD. Praying, reading Quran is what you do for yourself - for disciplining, purifying your own self. I really was astonished to read that Allah would write a good deed in our account even if we have just thought of it and not actually done it and also it is recorded as a good deed if we have thought of a bad deed and have not done it. This completely justifies that Allah is beneficent and merciful. Respecting mummy, papa and all elders, prohibiting the use of intoxicants - such aspects make Islam -the secret of life which brings everything that you want in life. The chapter Quran and modern science was so amazing, I could have never thought that atoms could be divided is mentioned in the quran. For me, this chapter and why I believe in god were the best ones in the book. Coincidentally, while I was reading the chapter Islam & racism, in school the chapter -constitution of republic of South Africa was being done .sooo.. When the teacher went off subject, I gave the example of hajj where everyone is made to wear the same attire irrespective of race or background .she was really impressed!! Every year I used to make a resolution not to be a pessimistic but always failed to follow it with diligence .since the time i have learnt from the book that we should count the favors given by god and not the lacks I have become an optimistic to a great extent.
