Kathleen Rice Simpson is a perinatal clinical nurse specialist at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, MO, a tertiary care perinatal center averaging over 6,000 births annually, and adjunct faculty member at Barnes College of Nursing at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has acted as a consultant to a perinatal home health care agency and to third-party payors in program design and protocol development for care of women with high-risk pregnancies and women and newborns during the postpartum period in the home setting. She has published articles and chapters on high-risk perinatal nursing, fetal monitoring, perinatal home care, standards of care and research-based, cost-effective practice, and has presented seminars and workshops on these issues. Ms. Simpson is the co-editor of AWHONN's Perinatal Nursing (1996).

Ms. Simpson is a member of AWHONN and serves on the AWHONN Committee on Practice and the Task Force to revise the Standards for the Nursing Care of Women and Newborns. She is a member of the High-Risk Obstetric Nursing Test Committee of the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties and is a member of the NCC Board of Directors. She is also a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau and the Midwest Nursing Research Society.

Ms. Simpson would like to thank Margaret Comerford Freda, Lynn Wellman, and Joy Grohar for their assistance and encouragement in the preparation of this module.
