5.0 out of 5 stars A True Storyteller
I stumbled upon David Wilcox about six years ago in Keene New Hampshire where he played live at the college up there. What an amazing talent ... especially his ability to engage his audience and tell compelling stories with wonderful musicianship and artful turn of phrase. 2.0 out of 5 stars Wilcox with an attitude!
I own all of Wilcox's CDs, but this one is the most unique. It presents David on the edge, a musician with an attitude. These songs are less reflective, but showcase David's storytelling abilities. I would only recommend this one to die-hard Wilcox fans. It's not one for the faint of heart, or the easily offended.

I stumbled upon David Wilcox about six years ago in Keene New Hampshire where he played live at the college up there. What an amazing talent ... especially his ability to engage his audience and tell compelling stories with wonderful musicianship and artful turn of phrase. I recommend this CD of his live work enthusiastically, because, as others have written, it gives a true feel for the unique and enriching experience that comes with seeing him live. Blow 'Em Away is an hilarious song that makes me laugh at my own "road rage", "Johnny's Camaro" shines a bright light on empty materialism, and the Mango Song is worth the price of admission all on its own. Do yourself a favor and pick this gem up.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Takes 2 Parking Spaces..., August 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: East Asheville Hardware (Audio CD)
Great! Just great! Now, each time I see someone parked crossways in a parking space I laugh and state "It takes TWO parking spaces for Johnny's Camaro!!!" David's music is not just a reflection of life. Life is David's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wilcox's Best Disc, November 20, 1998
This review is from: East Asheville Hardware (Audio CD)
I consider this the best Wilcox album available. I have all the other albums also but this one captures the one characteristic that all the other's don't, David's sense of humor. Blow 'em Away, When You Love Somebody, and Roadside are nothing short of hilarious. Of course the acoustic rifts and smooth meaningful vocals are still the focus but this album captures the entire realm of Wilcox the entertainer. If you buy one David Wilcox album, make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get a grip!, March 31, 2005

This album is supposed to be funny and it is! I can't believe that some folks are so thinned skinned that this album could offend. It's only offensive if you're over 70, or a puritan. It also happens to be one of the best albums I've ever heard. East Ashville Hardware alone is worth the price of this album. This album was my first exposure to David Wilcox and it made me an instant fan. A GREAT album. His songs have a modern day Jim Croce, as a solo act.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have, July 16, 2002

This review is from: East Asheville Hardware (Audio CD)
I have probably four or five of Dave's CDs, I always have one in the car (my husband claims this drives him crazy, but he is often the one placing it in the CD player!). Somehow I lost this one and I find none of the others replaces it, although they do overlap on some of the songs.
This is hands-down the MUST HAVE Wilcox CD. Like everyone says, it is the next best thing to being there. The combination of music and stories is not on any other CD. I am buying it again, obviously, and cannot wait to have it back. Amazing how many times I can listen to it and never get sick of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't see him in concert?, May 19, 2000
This review is from: East Asheville Hardware (Audio CD)
No problem! This CD is a brilliant collection of several songs usually reserved for live audiences. It offers a entertaining glimpse into the showman/storyteller performer. It gives a totally different perspective than just buying his earlier albums. Funny, thought provoking, and always fun to listen to!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great live set... gives a great feel of the concert., October 1, 2000
This review is from: East Asheville Hardware (Audio CD)
No one knows his name, unless they are a fan. If so, they know all of the words by heart. This guy is so good you can't help but listen. I'd suggest "How Did You Find Me Here" for the beginner, but you'll end up buying this one anyway.

I've seen David Wilcox in concert four times, each time has only gotten better. It's him, his guitar, a microphone, and an audience in the palm of his hand. This set comes closest to helping you feel what it's like to see him live. If you can find the video "An Artist's Profile," it also gives you a great insight to a talented artist.

This is the album I select when I want to introduce someone to David Wilcox - which I only do when the person, like the album, means something to me. Yes, it has an edge; but so does life. Every song on this well-developed album appears carefully chosen to appeal to a different mood or time in each of our lives. Others have already spoken of Blow 'Em Away and Johnny's Camaro which were the only two I ever heard on radio. Check out "You Should See The Way It Feels" and "Golden Day" for the more reflective side of David Wilcox. I've read some of the critical reviews and smiled; David anticipates their reaction and comments about in on several intros, but I urge you - don't walk out on this concert on CD. My 18 year old daughter still comments about the right way to eat a mango, which we learned from this album! The wide range of topics, moods and delivery on this album makes it unique - and a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful as heck., July 18, 2005
This review is from: East Asheville Hardware (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite albums. Some of David Wilcox's other releases are saccharine for my taste. but East Ashville retains an edge that makes this effort standout. I heartedly recommend this collection of smart, funny and beautifully performed songs. For my money it's one of the best contemporary folk albums out there.

If you are looking for music that is wholesome, pure, and filled with only sweetness and light.... this is still an outstanding release, but you may be happier with one of his other material.
