Book Description

November 30, 2002 0313305579 978-0313305573

In a series of in-depth essays, this book describes the United States' response to diplomatic, economic, military, political, and cultural developments in East Asia. While focusing particularly on China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, the encyclopedia also provides solid coverage of Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan. Written by distinguished scholars from nine countries, the entries cover all of the significant people, controversies, conflicts, and agreements of the past two centuries.

Individual entries, many of which were written by the acknowledged authority on the subject, reflect the most current thinking and up-to-date research, and include sources of additional information. This encyclopedia will be useful to Asian specialists and students, as well as scholars in the broader fields of international history and foreign relations, making it an excellent resource for public and academic libraries.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Matray, professor of history at California State-Chico, has put together a list of experts from both sides of the Pacific to write this encyclopedia. China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam are treated in various entries accessible through the index, rather than in concise overviews, but there are individual entries for almost every other nation in East Asia, including Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Micronesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan. Other entries cover people (Aquino, Corazon; MacArthur, Douglas; Pol Pot); events (Boxer uprising, Tokyo war crime trials, Pueblo incident); and a variety of other topics germane to U.S. relations with East Asia (Boat people, Exclusion acts, North Korean nuclear controversy, Ping-Pong diplomacy, Viet Cong). The text focuses on diplomacy, economics, and politics, although there is also some coverage of military and cultural affairs.

Pinyin spelling of Chinese names and places is used, so familiar names to U.S. readers like Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen are rendered in different spellings (Jiang Jieshi and Sun Zhongshan). Cross-references and a useful name index, along with a subject index, make it easy to locate the material that is needed. Both volumes contain several maps of the region as well as a chronology. The articles are brief (from around one-half to two pages) but thorough, giving the reader a quick look at the particular topic. The extensive set bibliography is divided into subject areas and includes numerous sources in languages other than English.

Better fact checking would have noted that Chinese general Sun Liren died in 1990 at the age of 91 and is not still living as indicated in his entry. On the whole, however, this is a set that students and interested patrons in most large public and academic libraries will find very helpful when researching the U.S. role and relations on the other side of the Pacific. Review

"James Matray has pulled off the Trifecta of academic reference books by making the East Asia and The United States comprehensive, accurate, and, above all, readable. These short, informative essays by specialists covers a remarkably varied array of people, nations, political controversies, treaties, military struggles, and cultural themes central to understanding the past two centuries of American relations with East Asia. Students and scholars alike will turn to it as a reliable guide to the field and a pleasure to read in its own right. This will be a 'must buy' for both personal and insitutional libraries." Michael Schaller Professor of History The University of Arizona
