5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough research
This book arrives in time to help to understand the Asian economic crisis. And it traces the hurdles Asia must overcome to once again become an economic powerhouse. The essays carry the reader through a rich range of materials. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
Some of the chapters in this book are interesting (I liked the ones dealing with corporate strategies) but by and large this book says little new. Edited books, such as this one, are sometimes difficult to sustain as the writing styles and approaches across contributors vary so widely -- the editor fails to adequately pull this one off as little expertise or guidance...

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited, August 21, 2000

This review is from: The East Asian Development Model: Economic Growth, Institutional Failure and the Aftermath of the Crisis (Hardcover)
This is an interesting topic, but rather poorly edited. The chapters are often choppy and the writing style varies widely from chapter to chapter. Some "binding chapters" would have been good; or some further editorial elucidation. However, many of the chapters are very interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... towards a new, sustainable Asia, August 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The East Asian Development Model: Economic Growth, Institutional Failure and the Aftermath of the Crisis (Hardcover)
This book focuses on the key issues that have to be addressed if the new millennium is to transcend the simplistic dilemma of Anglo-Saxon capitalism versus Asian-style development policy and create a new, sustainable Asia. The book is an interesting intellectual contribution to the evolving debate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond platitudes of capitalism, September 12, 2000
This review is from: The East Asian Development Model: Economic Growth, Institutional Failure and the Aftermath of the Crisis (Hardcover)
The 'Asian model' has many flaws: authoritarian leadership, rigid planning, intransparent decision making, etc. But economic thinking of the conventional kind rarely gets beyond platitudes about US-style capitalism. Conventional capitalism is not perfect as it is. The result is exaggerated individualism and too little cooperation. The essays in this book try to search for an alternative model between US-style market mediation and (old-fashioned) Asian capitalism. The book is accessible to, and deserves to be read by, a wide readership inside and outside of economics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource on Asian capitalism, August 25, 2000
This review is from: The East Asian Development Model: Economic Growth, Institutional Failure and the Aftermath of the Crisis (Hardcover)
Over the last decades of economic growth , and then crisis in East Asia, there have been surely mistakes, but there were also many features done right. This book discusses the ingredients of the Asian model, its merits and its flaws. The contributors first review the Asian economic crisis. They then describe the variants of economic development models in East Asia. A last section looks into the strategic responses of Asian firms. A very balanced and rich account of Asian capitalism. I enjoyed to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Asian models of governance, July 22, 2000

This review is from: The East Asian Development Model: Economic Growth, Institutional Failure and the Aftermath of the Crisis (Hardcover)
The institutional approach to the East Asian economic crisis is certainly a novel one. A good read, this book provides a wealth of background information about Asian models of governance.
