Book Description

December 4, 2011
East of Bowery began as a collaborative web project between writer Drew Hubner (American by Blood, We Pierce) and photographer Ted Barron in 2008. It was subsequently performed as a multi-media performance with live musical accompaniment at The Gershwin Hotel and The Bowery Poetry Club. This is the first print publication of the project.

"Drew Hubner's prose and Ted Barron's photos are kin, at once raw and lyrical, grit and grace, which is what the city was like back then. The combination is magic, the essence of the time and place." - Luc Sante, author of Low Life and Kill All Your Darlings

"East of Bowery is a sharply-focused, street-level view of Downtown before the real estate agents started renaming everything."  - Steve Earle, author of Doghouse Roses and I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive

"Drew Hubner writes like people used to." - William Georgiades, New York Magazine

"The voice is loose, jazzy, and fast, the memories liquid and hot, avoiding the romance of macho drug memoirs with black humor, verisimilitude and a knack for the absurd..." - Kate Christensen, author of In the Drink and The Astral

5.0 out of 5 stars An Authentic Voice Of New York's Lower East Sid December 13, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
No thinly disguised bildungsroman for Drew Hubner. Hubner a survivor of
the heroin version of the decade long Loasida pub crawl through hell
returns triumphant with gritty tales of the long lost Lower East Side the
way it was before the fake hipsters and yuppies turned it into Disneyland
For Douchebags. In East of Bowery a wet behind the ears, innocent from the North Carolina arrives on the L.E.S. looking to make his literary mark in a neighborhood teeming with Bukowski wannabees, experiencing the dope life on the streets of the unvarnished L.E.S. where transgression is not a dirty word, but rather a way of life. Hubner's L.E.S. illustrated with photos by Ted Barron, the John Fante of B&W photography, is instantly recognizably authentic to those who lived for it - and will be a huge pleasure for readers who get to experience it years later from the comfort of a cozy armchair with a cat on their lap. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaking...... December 28, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a story by a writer. With photo's by an artist. This is not a book by someone who writes to eat. This is by a soul who eats to write. This book left me feeling truth like few books have.

5.0 out of 5 stars East of Bowery December 6, 2011

Drew Hubner writes like he's captured the flag, and Ted Barron's photographs remind me that the world has luminosity and soul, and that life is for living, and worth it.
