5.0 out of 5 stars Mandolin Mensch, November 8, 2006
By
This review is from: East Flatbush Blues (Audio CD)
With this outstanding release, Andy Statman has perfected a new musical genre. Let's call it "Bop-Grass." The format is (usually) a power trio (mandolin-bass-drums) and while I normally prefer my bluegrass sans drums, it is--in fact--the percussion that makes these sessions so special. Don't be fooled by the bluegrassy titles or the fact that some of these tracks were recorded in a Brooklyn synagogue: this is very hot free-form fiddle-tune music played by a master of the mandolin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Andy is awesome, October 18, 2007

Do you like bluegrass? Do you like jazz? Are you interested in the mandolin? If you answered yes to any of the above this recording is essential listening. At times, Andy plays with a fire rarely seen since Bill Monroe yet he can also take interstellar flights reminiscent of the great jazz players of the 60s. And somehow he never leaves the listener behind despite the prodigious chops. At times I found myself forgetting that a mandolin was playing. I just heard really great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2008 Grammy Nominee, January 23, 2008

Not only is this a milestone in creative mandolin-playing and composition, but it is even getting some of the recognition it deserves! "Rawhide" was just nominated for a Grammy award. Word has it that Statman will be in Nashville to record on Bela Fleck's forthcoming CD around the time of the awards, and may be on hand to receive what his fans hope will be his Grammy. (But winner or not, Andy really outdid himself with this brilliant and many-sided performance.)
