Product Description

Talonsoft's East Front is an attempt to recreate the entirety of World War II's Eastern Front, from the initial German advances to the eventual massive Soviet counterattack. The game is played from an isometric perspective with different terrain-types depicted on a hex-map and individual platoons represented by miniature toy soldier icons. Each scenario in the game involves capturing all the objective points on the map before a certain number of turns have elapsed. The game uses a single-phase turn-based system with one side conducting all attacks and movements within its turn, at which time it passes to the opposing side. This continues until the scenario's full number of turns has elapsed. Within each turn, players must move their platoons individually; each platoon begins a turn with 100 movement points that can be spent to perform actions. Attacks cost a certain amount of points depending on the platoon, while movement costs are levied per hex depending on terrain. Players can order platoons to move and fire in any order or combination until movement points are exhausted. Units have a morale value, indicating their resistance to being routed. Each unit also has an individual strength rating; when the rating is dropped to zero through absorbing attacks the unit is effectively destroyed. Units have two attack ratings, one against armor and one against personnel. These form the base ratings for combat calculation and drop as the attack range is increased.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ruined By Slow Gameplay, April 20, 2002

This review is from: East Front (CD-ROM)
EAST FRONT is historical turn based strategy game where you can choose between being the wermacht or the red army. The great thing about EAST FRONT is its attention to historical detail. When the wermacht invade the USSR they`re supplied by horse and carts and have panzerwagen mark 3s` as their main battle tanks. When you change the settings to 1944 they`re supplied by trucks and have the infamous panthers and tigers as their tanks while the Soviets have T34s`.

If it`s such a well researched game why three stars ? The big problem is the very poor game speed. A battle sceanario may take two or three days to play 17 turns . EAST FRONT features the battle of Stalingrad and contains literally hundreds of units but it takes so long waiting for the AI to move these units you eventually start losing intrest in the outcome.

So Talon Soft please improve the AI if you want to bring out a brillant second game

This game is for those of us who remember Avalon Hill. This is reminicent of board wargaming, sand table tactics. It is very well done, but will bore to tears the shoot 'em up, fast action crowd. The graphics aren't spectacular but they are as good as they need to be.

My Dad remembered playing this game back in the 90's so he asked me if I could get it. It's an easy turn based game, he's about 70 years old so those are the kind of games he likes. From what I saw of the game, the graphics are surprisingly good, but the game doesn't seem complex enough to hold my attention. My Dad really likes it & he has been playing a lot. The order went through smooth, the delivery came faster than expected and in good shape. Overall 5 stars all around.
