Editorial Reviews

Review

Ike Turner saved some of his most vicious guitar riffs for tiny Stevens Records.... [Included are] two of Turner's hardest rocking, whammy-bar-laden instrumentals.... This collection ... pays loving tribute to the recording efforts of erstwhile painting contractors Fred and Bill Stevens.... The label's output fills one compact disc quite nicely, Bill Greensmith's updated liner notes sketching in an important if generally overlooked chapter in Gateway City R&B history. -- Living Blues

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By A. J. Theising on April 9, 2004
Format: Audio CD
What an outstanding collection of important music. The Stevens Sessions show how larger musical trends were found in the streets of East St. Louis, Illinois (a city with its own wonderful musical history) through these original compositions.
The "East St. Louis Rock" has all the hallmarks of a hit song, and probably would have excelled if only it had reached the right markets at the right time.
Thanks to the publisher for preserving this outstanding musical history.
