East by Sea and West by Rail is an intriguing story of the life of a Yankee entrepreneur in the first half of the nineteenth century. The journal is beautifully written and the documentation and descriptions provided by the editor are informative and helpful. If you are interested in a firsthand account of what America was like before the Civil War, this is a must read.
