Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Like many immigrant children of the early 1900s, Rachel, 11, and her teenage sister Leah work in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on the Lower East Side of New York City. This simple-to-read historical novel effectively portrays issues pertinent to the time period. Through Rachel's experience, readers see the courage and determination, success and failure of the workers' efforts to unionize for better and safer working conditions. At the same time, the Jewish heroine befriends an Italian boy, the brother of one of the factory girls involved in the organizing. Their very different backgrounds are a minor concern as they learn from one another and develop a bonding relationship. Lastly, the reasoning behind child labor laws and equal education for boys and girls is nicely interwoven throughout the story. A postscript gives further information about the events in the book. A worthy addition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of a Marvelous Book, December 21, 2006
A Kid's Review
I thought East Side Story was an enthralling masterpiece. The author gives astonishing details about life in the early 1900's. When she describes the working conditions in the factory, you can see the supervisor shoving Rachel into a crate. The book had a remarkable storyline telling what events Rachel experienced. Because it was realistic, a reader can relate to Rachel's story. In conclusion, East Side Story was a fantastic read.

A Kid's Review
I think that East Side Story was remarkable. The description made me picture the early 1900's. You never know what is going to happen next for example when Leah got fired. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were realistic. I liked this book, But it needs more details in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book to read!, December 21, 2006
A Kid's Review
East Side Story was astonishing because some of the parts were shocking, like when Leah got arrested during the strike. The story had an unexpected ending because Antonio was going to leave his friend and go to Brooklyn. Also, it was surprising when Rachel stood up for herself to her father about peddling. Another exciting event was when the bullies tried to rob Rachel. Because of these reasons, the story got my attention and kept me wanting to read more.
