Temple was an attorney and politician, born in Greene County TN in 1820. He was one of the leaders of the Unionists in Eastern TN during the civil war. This is a history of that area going back into the 18th century, written in the style of many history books of the 19th century. Temple writes a fairly even handed account of the Civil War, which was so contentious among the residents of his home area. He mostly sticks to writing in a general third person style, even though he was present, indeed played a leadership role, in many events chronicled. I think for most people, a more modern history of East TN would be more satisfying, one that is sourced, particularly for the pre-war era. However, that said, much of what Temple wrote about the war years he himself serves as the primary source for, and his avoidance (for the most part) of the sort of seething, snake venom, partisan rhetoric common to particpants at that time, makes that section of the book very readable.

On the down side, Temple tends to be long winded, and sometimes repetitious. My interest is primary sources of the Civil War, and that part of the book I found quite valuable.

Although I grew up in East Tennessee, I didn't know history of Tenn. during the civil War. I recognized most of the locations written about and found it very interesting to learn attitudes and behavior in the area. Recommend this as reading for everyone that has interest in the Civil War area.

Portions ramble on and on with the personal views of the author that have nothing to do with the topic. He then makes some ridiculous claims that slavery was continued only because the abolitionists wanted it abolished.
