East West and Beyond,
By
This review is from: East, West, and Beyond (Paperback)
This new collection of poetry takes the reader on a journey of mind, body and spirit through geographical and cultural distances. Gloria Dyc's grandparents immigrated from Poland, she grew up in Detroit, eventually moving West. She now teaches at the University of New Mexico-Gallup. The poems cover a kaleidoscope of experiences living among the Lakota in South Dakoka and the Navajo in New Mexico. She observes people and landscapes and shares her sights even if others say they don't exist.
The writing doesn't exactly lift off the page as you want poetry to, and her note that rivers to the east flow to the Atlantic and rivers to the west flow to the pacific certainly doesn't reveal anything new. Yet her time is well spent, steeped among the plants and people in our state and her writing does let us in on some unique adventures.

Want to experience Detroit in the sixties? Indian reservations in the seventies, eighties, and today? This short volume takes the reader on an emotional journey that illuminates aspects of the American experience not often encountered in poetry or prose. Because I'm a linear thinker I also appreciated the clarity of the poet's words and descriptions.
