Editorial Reviews

Continuing the tradition of fabled trumpet duo sessions that have included Fats Navarro & Howard McGhee and Freddie Hubbard & Woody Shaw, two of the more dynamic and versatile trumpeters anywhere, New Yorker Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott from Seattle, make up the front line of this power-packed quintet as they take a joyous ride through a collection of jazz classics and original compositions. Featuring pianist Travis Shook, drummer Matt Jorgensen & bassist Jeff Johnson, the band tears through standards such as It's You or No One that are sure to excite the general jazz audience as much as fans of the trumpet. Far from a ''cutting session,'' this recording showcases the sensibilities and styles of both coasts of the U.S. and how they can partner to cover a good deal of stylistic territory while remaining both lyrical and exciting.

Another outstanding release by the prolific Thomas Marriott, this time partnering with mentor/friend Ray Vega. They first encountered each other while Marriott was in the UW Jazz Studies program and NYC-based Vega came to Seattle with Tito Puente.

They've managed to play together when Thomas was paying his dues in NYC, and after returning to Seattle, including performances this year in Bern, Switzerland, and the Denver Jazz Festival. You can sure hear their musical bond on East-West Trumpet Summit.

Whether playing two horn harmonies, or trading solos, these guys are playing with, and listening to, each other. Same is true of the locked-in rhythm section, with sure handed pianist Travis Shook representing for the east, and Seattle stalwarts Matt Jorgensen on drums and Jeff Johnson on bass stepping up for the Pacific Northwest. These guys must have really enjoyed the sessions.

A handful of standards plus tunes penned by both Marriott and Vega make for a fine set of music, including both burners and ballads. And, unless I've got my wires crossed, the excellent mix keeps Marriott in the west (left coast) and Vega in the east (right coast), which makes for some fine ear candy when you put the cans on.

Very nice. A fine summit meeting of the East (NYC) and the Pacific Northwest (Seattle) jazz scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knock my socks off! January 9, 2011

This album didn't shoot to #1 for nothin! I have given a copy to nearly every family member for Christmas and highly recommend even for those who aren't jazz fans. This is good music for young and old, diehard jazz fans and newbies alike.
Go get it!
