Boy did I learn a lot of history that I knew nothing about. I facilitate a book chub at our church so I am constantly looking for books that might not be on the radar of the big box stores. This one caught my eye when Amazon advertised it as one I might like and I truly did. It is a true story and great for Book Club discussion. Good character development and fascinating events. Full of little know facts about the Pearl Harbor attack and its aftermath. Great read!

This was a war story I had never heard. In the bigger picture it may seem insignificant but it was actually extremely significant to many people. I believe a movie is being made by a Japanese director and if this is so I can't wait to see it.
This is a book I highly recommend.

Mr. Robinson's family has owned Nihau, a small Hawaiian Island, for generations. He teaches the natives through third or fourth grade, treats them well, but doesn't allow them off the island into the `wicked world' out there. They have no radios or telephones to access the outside world.

While he is off to the big Island for supplies, Pearl Harbor is bombed. And one small Japanese pilot crash lands in Nihau Island. He convinces one Japanese couple, employees of Mr. Robinson, that Japan has taken over the world and will soon invade this island.

Howard Kaleohine, the village head, took a sheaf of papers from the pilot and hid them. The pilot believes he must find and destroy that sheaf, demolish his plane and commit suicide for the glory of Japan.

The villagers wonder why Mr. Robinson doesn't return as usual from his trip. They don't know what to do about the plane or the pilot. Finally the pilot, desperate for his papers, causes major mayhem and the villagers hide. How one small woman brings about resolution and common sense makes a unique and satisfying, though somewhat sad, end to the story.

Based on a true event, East Wind, Rain will be a tough book to set down before finishing the entire volume.

Who knew?! I had never heard a whisper of the true story behind this novel - that of a Japanese pilot, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, who crash lands his plane on the tiny, isolated island of Ni'ihau. I also knew nothing about the political/social conditions of the people who lived in isolation there.
I think the writing was beautiful. I felt carried back to that time, that I was there, listening in and watching the events unfold. I had never heard of Caroline Paul before! I think she is an amazingly talented writer!

The story is a new twist on the "caught behind enemy lines" concept. It could only be believable if it really happened - and it did. Just the idea of it reeks with excitement. The story is historical fiction and well written, but needs more work with an editor to maintain the necessary suspense of the storyline. The middle portion of the book slows the story down to the same pace as life on the remote island. Many pages pass without advancing the main theme of the story. From the first page the reader wants to know, "What happens, what happens to the pilot?" The ponderous middle section of the book nearly kills the suspense of the story line. Eventually the excitement does return, and again, for the first time since the beginning of the book, I read each word with a yearning for the next. The conclusion does not disappoint; it is not an ending you would likely to have guessed before hand.

A surprisingly good novel based on fact - Dec. 7, 1941 on a small island in Hawaii. I have passed this on to a friend who will appreciate it's culture.

I ordered this book because we were going to Hawaii and I wanted to read something with local flavor. I had never heard of this incident before and it sounded like it would be interesting. (I also have a Niihau shell lei (necklace) from my mother-in-law, so that added to the interest.)

Apparently there is not enough fact to write a true account, but Caroline Paul conjures up a story to fill in the blanks. I was amazed to learn about the continued isolation of the residents of this island TO THIS DAY. THAT was an eye opener! They still are not allowed to have telephones, TVs, radios, or newspapers. There is only solar power. Horses provide transportation as there are no cars either. All this in order to preserve the Hawaiian culture and traditions.

There were many ways the story could have been written, but of course, it seems no one knows how it actually went. Since Paul was never able to visit the island and speak with them, it is all conjecture. I don't know if she knows the Hawaiian ways well enough to know whether this is how they might have resolved this issue.
