Long Lost Poetry of Easter Island, April 30, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: East of the navel and afterbirth: Reflections and song poetry from Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
Written nearly 30 years ago when travel to Easter Island was by ship and occasional plane, this is one of the few books which have considered the lives and thoughts of those few people living THEN on this lonely island. Nowadays Easter Island is almost a tourist resort. The original poetry translated into English is seldom mentioned in contemporary discussions. Dr Day was working with lepers on Easter Island. He stayed there primarily to carry out medical work, but during his stay he collected these wonderful writings and set them into English. These writings are as important as the aecheological artifacts that seem to attract everyone to the omission of thoughts about the people who live there.
