The Low Down on England's # 1 Soap Opera,
By
This review is from: Eastenders Who's Who (Paperback)
Another confession, I am addicted to Eastenders. Why oh why do the Brits make TV sooo much better than we do? What makes Eastenders so great? Well, the main characters aren't a bunch wealthy idiots, in some fictional city at some fictional mega-corporation with too much time on their hands, too much perfect make-up who spend all day making goo-goo eyes at one another. In England, this soap is about the working class, struggling with their jobs at the local pub, the laundrymat, local small gorcery store, the cafe, etc. The women look like REAL women, they use a huge variety of people, you know, like you find in the actual world? Don't get me wrong, there are some very attractive women (and men as well!) on Eastenders, but they don't get all the airtime. This book is a super look at the past, which always plays a part in the current storyline, and helps new viewers understand some of the undercurrents between many of the characters. You should check out the show and this great history.

Fabulous EastEnders Resource!,
By
This review is from: Eastenders Who's Who (Paperback)
This book is a must have for the EastEnders fan. It is very behind the times as far as what is currently going on on the show in Great Britain but it is a bit ahead from where I am in Central New York. Because of that I currently know a little more than I should about what is going to happen - and although that is kind of fun, it's a little disappointing too because I won't be surprised. However, I just loved reading this book - couldn't put it down. It gives you so much information on all "current" characters (at least from where I'm watching - it seems to be current through at least the beginning of 2000) and has a section about all of the old characters too (many of whom I really miss!). Anyway, if you're an EastEnders fan or someone who has just started to watch and is a bit confused, this is a great resource for you! Thoroughly enjoyable.

Great Eastenders Reference Guide,
By "krauterbrenda" (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eastenders Who's Who (Paperback)
This book is a great reference guide for all Eastenders fans. Almost all characters - past and present - are shown in colour photos accompanied by a short character bio. Name of the actor/actress is also given, though there is no info given about the actor/actress. The beginning of the book also has a handy diagram layout of the buildings in Albert Square so you can get a feel for the proximity of the Cafe to the Queen Vic, etc. All character names are listed at the back of the book, along with page numbers for fast look-up. Some bios may contain spoilers depending on how up to date Eastenders is in your viewing area. This book is a very satisfactory guide to Who's Who in Eastenders.

This book is a nice way to get to know the characters for new E.E. fans. I however got it simply as a keepsake. I've been watching this show for the past fifteen years, and I'm hooked on the realness of Albert Square.

"EastEnders" is Great Show. Book Offers Strong Background,
By
This review is from: Eastenders Who's Who (Paperback)
Being relatively new to folks who populate Albert Square on "EastEnders," this book offered tremendous insight on what I've missed and who's who. It's great for background stuff, particularly on who's related to who and how they've grown since the show premiered. The only drawback is that it was written a few years back. That means some of the current characters are nowhere to be found. But you can't have everything.

Great resource for newbies,
By David Hurt (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eastenders Who's Who (Paperback)
I found this book very helpful in figureing out who's who on the show. It is a little dated, though because new characters come on the show frequently. It also is great at giving you a little "dirt" on the characters.

GR8 to keep on hand for reference and Eastenders memorabilia isn't always so easy to find. I'm a HUGE Eastenders fan, so this was a GR8 addition to my collection:-)

For those who want the background...,

This is a very good book for those who need to understand this British soap's plot history. It's easy reading without giving away much. But those reviewers who think that Eastenders is "realistic" have obviously never lived in the East End of London. No one utters the "F word", hardly anyone smokes, and all the incestuous and adulterous relationships on the show make it appear as if there were a shortage of people in the UK. Everyone in Walford has shagged a cousin, a friend's wife, a neighbor, a son-in-law at least once. Realistic? Everyone knows each other's name, conflicts are resolved within 20 minutes and in the end, they're all one big happy family regardless of who slept with whom. Please! The plotlines are recycled every year or two.
Most working class people in London are decent and respectful. Many are educated, hard-working and especially among the immigrants, hold religion and education in high regard (unlike the show). Eastenders is deemed "realistic" because the characters aren't very glamorous, they speak terrible English and they're not wealthy, not college-educated. In fact, there's almost a disdain for the wealthy and the educated. Eastenders is not "better" than American soaps -- just more depressing and drab...and myopic. |
