5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is an extremely interesting account of Dos Passo's visit to the Island in the mid-1970's. He also delves into a great amount of history surrounding the discovery, settlement, and ultimate downfall of the mysterious civilization that once inhabited the Island. I would definitely recommend reading this book before you travel there, since it provides you with some...

This book was ridiculous, and such a chore to read. Passos wrote only the last chapter of it or so, the rest is verbatim accounts of the early discoverers and explorers. This is an extremely interesting account of Dos Passo's visit to the Island in the mid-1970's. He also delves into a great amount of history surrounding the discovery, settlement, and ultimate downfall of the mysterious civilization that once inhabited the Island. I would definitely recommend reading this book before you travel there, since it provides you with some very interesting background on the Island that you are likely not to learn anywhere else. Even if you do not plan on traveling there but just enjoy reading about adventures in the South Pacific, this book is for you! Enjoy!

This book was ridiculous, and such a chore to read. Passos wrote only the last chapter of it or so, the rest is verbatim accounts of the early discoverers and explorers. Which indeed can be of interest, but probably not to the lay reader just interested in getting to the point. A much more interesting, informative, thorough, and engaging book is Easter Island: The Mystery Solved by Thor Heyerdahl. It summarizes and explains all of these accounts within the context of history, eliminating a lot of puzzle-solving and deductive analysis for the reader.
