From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5–Beginning with an introduction that cites the appearance of the Easter Bunny at the mall as a symbol heralding the imminent arrival of "the oldest Christian festival," the succeeding chapters cover historical origins and include descriptions of the symbols from eggs and bunnies to lambs and lilies, as well as both religious and secular celebrations, such as sunrise services, parades, and egg hunts. The events leading up to Jesus's death and resurrection are retold in simple terms, and the significance of the days of Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday, is explained. The informative text is enhanced with colorful photographs; sidebars containing tidbits of information, such as the possible origins of the name "Easter," a description of Lent, and an explanation of how the hot cross bun became an Easter symbol; and a craft project. The holiday's joyous message of hope and renewal is aptly conveyed throughout the book. A useful resource for reports and for general information.–Linda L.
