Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

An authoritative book that includes every tree that grows wild in eastern North America, north to the Arctic Ocean and south to the Gulf Coast, including the tropical trees of south Florida and the Florida keys. Using the unique system of identification employed in the author's other tree books, the 455 trees of the region are divided into six major groups according to conspicuous characteristics. Within those categories, trees that look alike are brought together and compared in text and illustration, regardless of whether they are related or not.

The color plates, beautifully painted by Janet Wehr, emphasize details that may not be present or clearly visible in a photograph. Differences between trees that resemble each other are pointed out also in distinctive comparison charts. With range maps, keys, descriptions, and illustrations, the user can identify trees at any season, even in leafless condition. Technical terminology is converted into plain English. The values of trees and their use by wildlife, Native Americans, and campers also are discussed.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable!, May 15, 2011
This review is from: Eastern Trees (Peterson Field Guides) (Paperback)
I am not a tree-cognizant person. I wish I were, but I'm not. So whenever I want to know what kind of tree I'm looking at in the forest, or in the suburbs or in the city, I need to consult a book on trees, and this book is fantastic. I love the way the book is organized, and how easy it is to look up trees by their trunk shape, their leaf structure, and the fruit they bear. I love the way I can learn about a tree's habitat and what tree family it belongs to. Plus there's a bit of history thrown in now and then, and I enjoy it. I am so glad I have this book, I use it a lot, and I highly recommend it to anybody who wants a guide to trees in the eastern US.

I have a lot of field guides and a lot of books on trees. I really like this one a lot. Also Peterson Guide to Edible Wild Plants and Birds are both great.
