Great fun,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers (Paperback)
"Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers" is not the most in depth book I've ever read. It doesn't plumb the depths of the human soul. It doesn't have characters unlike any you have read before. But it doesn't try to do any of these things, and that's just fine.
This book is a lot of fun as it takes you on romps through what is effectively a high school for fantasy heroes. Where did that dragon slayer learn how to sling his sword? Where did that all-powerful wizard learn how to cast his first fireball? More likely than not it was at Eastridge Academy. But this is still high school, complete with cool kids, jocks, and school dances. To warn you, this book does use alot of stereotypes. However, it uses them how I think they should be used, as a baseline as opposed to the entirety of a character. So unless you think that there is something inherently wrong with using stereotypes at all (they are there for a reason) I seriously doubt that you'll mind. In conclusion, if you're looking for heavy reading, look someplace else. But if you're looking for a mostly light-hearted quick-paced adventure, this is your bag baby.

Like nothing literature has witnessed since Lewis, Or Tolkien,
This review is from: Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers (Paperback)
I found this book to be one of the most engaging and interesting stories I've ever read. True, it is a light read, but even so, its highly capable of competing with some of the most well established works out there. A fantastic story of the beginning for young adventurers, letting you know, their story wasn't always chocolates and roses.

Pretty darn good,
This review is from: Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers (Paperback)
I stumbled across this and it turns out to be a pretty good read. There wasn't enough character development for me but between introducing the characters, coming up with a good plot, and not making it epically long to include all this stuff I think they did a pretty good job. Especially the climax very invigorating. Can't wait for part 2!
**** The above is what I wrote when I previously reviewed this book. After ordering the book and re-reading it again this summer I decided to update this review. First off, this book isn't just a pretty darn good read. It's a pretty darn great read. It's extremely funny and well written. Because I had already read it, I knew what was coming and could focus more on the beginning part where I previously said there was no plot. They have, very cleverly I might add, inserted things that become important later in the story like the great J. K. Rowling did. Don't expect them to be mind-blowing but they are pretty cool. To close this review out, the only part I was annoyed at was the fact that the chapters are so long. I was reading it to my sister and I usually stop after every chapter but it was hard to with this book. Other than that it was great.

Good light reading,

While this isn't Lord of the Rings, it is a good read that I'd suggest for almost anyone interested in fantasy books. It's not a book that you can expect deep thought-provocation or anything like that, but when you just want to pick up a book and enjoy it for the sake of it being a good book - this is a really good choice. It's great for both casual and serious readers, and that in itself is quite a big accomplishment.

The Characters are Great!,
By
This review is from: Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers (Paperback)
I fell in love with the characters. Each main character has some endearing qualities. The characters are presented early on in the book and I quickly picked my favorite. But you'll quickly find that they're not cookie cutter characters and they evolve and surprise you throughout the book.
These four students who come from very different backgrounds all find themselves at the School for Adventurers under different circumstances. Then you're expecting them to become best friends who stick together through everything....Fortunately this book is not that predictable or honey dipped. Each student lives out their own experiences, triumphs, and disappointments. Their lives intersect throughout the book, as the multiple storylines progress. Sometimes subtle details will resurface later on in the book so I did find myself getting lost a few times and having to go back to prior scenes. The School for Adventurers is a unique story idea. The school has four majors: Warrior, Mage (magic), Cleric (medicine), and Thief (yes, you read that correctly). The four students are Averi (a rebellious princess who is a thief major), Wisteria Ling (lived in a monastery with warriors and was forced to attend the school), Rai (the charming cleric), and Fell (perhaps the character you want to root for the most, he comes from poverty and has entered the warrior major with no experience so he has to work twice as hard in his warrior classes while being bullied by the strongest warrior and has to work at the stables to pay to stay at the school). As I mentioned, they're not inseparable best friends, they each have their own relationships with each other. Some of the funniest scenes are when they're at odds with each other. I consider myself a picky reader. I often start books and don't finish them because I lose interest. I couldn't put this book down though. I highly recommend it!

I don't pretend to be a literary critic, what I am is someone who reads far too many books. I think by this point I've cleared out at least 60% of all the books in both the science fiction and fantasy of my university and local library and let me tell you what makes great books great to me.
A great book contains a world. A world where things don't have to be like ours, but in this world everything makes sense. You can see the characters and the world they are in and they play like a movie in your head. It doesn't matter if the characters are somehow unique from every other famous character and the world is different then every other world in all the other great books. It doesn't matter because in reality not everyone is a great hero, nor a dastardly villain. The people in this book seem like. People. Which might not seem like great praise but in a literary world full of characters trying to be great, and different, and unique you have to stop and think that these aren't really people. They're heroes and icons. Not every character can be a paragon of their race, or eschew their dark heritage on go on a quest to prove themselves worthy. Not every person will be a great knight or a powerful wizard. There will always be the farmer and the tanner. Boring normal folks, but you know what? They all have stories too. In this book I see characters who are normal folks, slightly different because they have some big dreams, and work damned hard to accomplish them. Just like in real life. And that's what makes it great. Not everyone gets a magic sword and is proclaimed king you know.

If You're Still Not Convinced...,

You can read it before you buy it! This book was first written as an online novel at [...]. Of course, the online version won't be as polished as the print version and you'll have to sit in front of your computer to read it, but I personally believe it's worth it. It is a light read, but interesting enough that you'll never want to stop until you finish. Plus, sneak a peek at Book 2 (currently in progress) while you're at the site!
And after you fall in love with the characters, you can come back to buy the book and support the authors =)

Great read!,
This review is from: Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers (Paperback)
Welcome to the mythical land of Easden, home of many intriguing characters and the greatest School for Adventurers: Eastridge Academy. Amazingly this story is written with the younger reader in mind, the teenager still in junior high school and beyond, attempting to make sense of their own personal dilemma's. The story is based around four main characters, and how they deal with everything from bullies, to course classes, romance, and school politics.
The characters are imaginative and believable, while the storyline is fun and light-hearted. It's literally a coming of age story set in medieval fantasy, one that I could barely put down until the final conclusion of the story. This is one to share with friends and family!

If you liked Harry potter you will love this,
This review is from: Eastridge Academy: School For Adventurers (Paperback)
Really entertaining book. Awesome character development and story line. This would make a great gift to any fantasy book fan especially those who loved Harry Potter. The big difference is the diversity in the 'majors' at the school for adventurers. In harry potter you just learn to be a wizard. In this series the students can choose paths of warrior theif mage and cleric. The diversity of different classes in the adventurer school really adds a lot to the story line making it very interesting!
