3.0 out of 5 stars A childhood wish fulfilled August 22, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
For years in a row as a kid my number one birthday and Christmas wish was an Easy Bake Oven. I was quite convinced I was simply going to DIE without one. Well, the years went by, I never got one, and I'm still here to tell the sad tale, so I guess lack of an Easy Bake Oven isn't fatal. Still I was awfully excited to get this one now in my middle years.

And now I see why my parents were never too keen to get me one. It is a fun toy, but it is a toy first, oven second. The mixes provided are practically microscopic in quantity and the resulting pastries are almost bite-sized. For a small mouse anyway. This oven comes with two pastry mixes plus frosting and sparkles. If you want to get additional mixes (which is pretty necessary if you want to continue using the oven), it'll cost you around $5.00 per mix or you can get an assortment of a dozen mixes for around $27.00. I can see why my parents didn't want to spend that kind of money. It's the gift that keeps on taking.

My girls and I did both included recipes this weekend (complete with frosting and sparkles!). At ages 4.5 and 2.5 they are well below the recommended age for this oven, but my older one was able to do most of the steps with supervision and minimal assistance. You'll need a pretty small bowl to stir up the mixes. The baking pan and cupcake tray are included. Fortunately, the only other required ingredient is water. Be careful not to put in too much - it takes only a spoonful.

Because the tray and cupcake pan are so little, it is rather difficult to get the mix into the tray/pan without creating a bit of a mess, and if you can get your tiny pastries to look as perfect as the ones in the picture, my hat is off to you.

Using the oven itself is pretty simple and easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boys love Easy Bake too! September 15, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I actually ordered this for my 7 year old son, who loves to help me cook. He paced the porch all day when the tracking number showed it out for delivery, and his reaction to the UPS truck did not disappoint. All this to say, he had very high expectations for how fun this would be.

This updated model sports the advantage of no longer using an incandescent bulb for heat, as these are increasingly difficult to come by. Other than that, this is your average Easy Bake oven. I didn't notice any difference between this model and models from my own childhood.

We immediately plugged it in and started mixing up one of the supplied mixes. After waiting 20 minutes for the oven to preheat, and 20 more for his cookies to bake, he was excited with his little pan of tiny cookies. One packet of mix yielded around a dozen nickle-sized chocolate chip cookies. Clean-up was minimal, although it would have been nice if the pans were dishwasher safe. There's even a little storage drawer in the bottom to hold the pans and a couple of mix packets. The only thing I'm having trouble storing well is the paddle. I wish it snapped onto the oven somehow to keep everything together.

We've since made the included cupcake mix, which proved just as exciting for him. The replacement mixes can get a bit pricey, but a quick search for Easy Bake recipes will yield you plenty of alternatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars I always wanted one ... August 25, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I had some Easy Bake mixes when I was a kid - but not the oven. I remember making them in our regular oven when I was around 6 - and getting my first burn when I grabbed a pan out without a potholder :( I always wanted the Easy Bake Oven.

My 8 year old just received the "new" Easy Bake Ultimate Oven. Even though she has been baking with me since age 3, she was over the moon with excitement to get her OWN oven. She read the directions and did every step herself. She baked chocolate chip cookies. While no one would mistake them for "from scratch" toll-house cookies, they weren't bad and were promptly devoured.

The oven takes 20 minutes to preheat (a regular oven would be 10 minutes). There is a fake "timer" that says 10:15. You can't see the items baking - the door appears translucent but items are not visible. That said, the oven is very cute and seems safe. It would be very difficult for a child to manage to burn herself. In fact, when the "cookie sheet" first came out of the "cooling chamber" my daughter grabbed it with her bare hand - as I did all those years ago - and it was just slightly warm to the touch - no burns or blisters.

One thing was confusing - the directions instruct you to turn off/unplug oven AFTER cooling. We wondered if that was a mistake - seems more logical to turn off oven after baking but before cooling?

We would like to get a couple of more pans (at least the "checkerboard" pan). Not sure how many more mixes we would purchase - we'll probably try some recipes over at eborecipes.com I also read a recommendation to use small amounts of regular cake mixes. Hasbro would probably sell more mixes if they were priced more fairly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money June 19, 2012

This was a real disappointment. I had been really excited for my daughter to get this, since I had great memories of my own Easy Bake oven. But, either my memory is bad, or they've changed the design for the worse. The "door" you see on the front of the oven is fake. There is no way to open it up -- it is not designed like a toaster oven as expected. Rather, you push your pan of dough or batter into a mysterious black hole and hope for the best. I am in my 40s and have a Ph.D. and decades of baking experience, and am an expert home baker -- and I couldn't work this thing. You have to work blind with this oven, which is no small feat, since you actually have to do different things with a paddle you can't see. We had no idea what was happening in there and whether the pan was in the "baking" or the "cooling" chamber. Plus, the pan got stuck every time and we had to turn the oven on its end and vigorously shake the oven until the pan came flying out and hit the floor. We ended up with a lot of burning batter stuck somewhere in the inside of the oven as well. So, if you want to make a child cry, this is a good toy to get.

Another disappointment was the sorry mixes. Super-easy for a child to make the dough or batter; but the amount is abysmally small. The oven comes with 2 mixes: cupcakes (less than a centimeter high) and cookies (supposed to make 12; my daughter ended up with 5 cookies about 2 cm across). Some reviewers saw this toy as educational: I guess if you never bake with your child, it could be. But honestly, my child was completely unable to work this oven, so I had to do it (I couldn't actually do it myself, really) -- she gets way more "education" reading and following a recipe with me -- plus we end up with a realistic amount of fresh, chemical-free food.
