3.0 out of 5 stars A childhood wish fulfilled August 22, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
For years in a row as a kid my number one birthday and Christmas wish was an Easy Bake Oven. I was quite convinced I was simply going to DIE without one. Well, the years went by, I never got one, and I'm still here to tell the sad tale, so I guess lack of an Easy Bake Oven isn't fatal. Still I was awfully excited to get this one now in my middle years.

And now I see why my parents were never too keen to get me one. It is a fun toy, but it is a toy first, oven second. The mixes provided are practically microscopic in quantity and the resulting pastries are almost bite-sized. For a small mouse anyway. This oven comes with two pastry mixes plus frosting and sparkles. If you want to get additional mixes (which is pretty necessary if you want to continue using the oven), it'll cost you around $5.00 per mix or you can get an assortment of a dozen mixes for around $27.00. I can see why my parents didn't want to spend that kind of money. It's the gift that keeps on taking.

My girls and I did both included recipes this weekend (complete with frosting and sparkles!). At ages 4.5 and 2.5 they are well below the recommended age for this oven, but my older one was able to do most of the steps with supervision and minimal assistance. You'll need a pretty small bowl to stir up the mixes. The baking pan and cupcake tray are included. Fortunately, the only other required ingredient is water. Be careful not to put in too much - it takes only a spoonful.

Because the tray and cupcake pan are so little, it is rather difficult to get the mix into the tray/pan without creating a bit of a mess, and if you can get your tiny pastries to look as perfect as the ones in the picture, my hat is off to you.

Using the oven itself is pretty simple and easy. You simply plug it in and turn the dial to "on". Wait twenty minutes (which is about how long it will take you to mix up the dough) and slide the tray into the opening on the left. The "pan pusher" has a convenient mark so you know how far to insert the tray. When the baking time is up (usually about 10 minutes), simply use the pan pusher to push the tray all the way through to the opening on the right. Then reverse the pan pusher and use the spatula end to remove the hot tray. That last step is a bit tricky as the opening is rather small and it can be difficult to get the spatula underneath the tray to pull it.

The treats are tasty enough, although not wildly delicious. The size is perfect for a tea party without having to worry about your children overindulging and spoiling their dinner. For a creative pastry chef, there are probably lots of things that could be baked in the Easy Bake, but it would probably be tricky mixing a small enough batch, unless you just use a small portion of a larger batch that you're planning to bake in a real oven.

With this new and improved model, the light bulb problem has been solved. In fact, no light bulbs are needed, so that's a plus. An even bigger plus is that there's no assembly required at all. The oven comes out of the box quite easily and is ready to be plugged in.

I'll probably get an assorted package of mixes for my older daughter's birthday and give the oven another run for its money. I can't see myself buying tons of mixes and using it a lot, but it's a fun family activity once in a while. 3.5 stars.

***10/26/2011 Update: We tried a bit of Pillsbury cookie dough this past weekend and a bit of pizza that we did in the real oven. We discovered a big drawback to this oven - you can't see inside to see how the product is coming along. We ended up taking the cookie dough out way too early, but my daughter didn't care - they liked the chewy, ooey, gooey-ness of it. We also took the pizza out too soon (twice) and had to put it back in. As I mentioned before, taking the tray out is a bit tricky and it's not a lot of fun to have to do it multiple times. But the pizza came out pretty good in the end; not as good as the pizza in the real oven, but pretty good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boys love Easy Bake too! September 15, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I actually ordered this for my 7 year old son, who loves to help me cook. He paced the porch all day when the tracking number showed it out for delivery, and his reaction to the UPS truck did not disappoint. All this to say, he had very high expectations for how fun this would be.

This updated model sports the advantage of no longer using an incandescent bulb for heat, as these are increasingly difficult to come by. Other than that, this is your average Easy Bake oven. I didn't notice any difference between this model and models from my own childhood.

We immediately plugged it in and started mixing up one of the supplied mixes. After waiting 20 minutes for the oven to preheat, and 20 more for his cookies to bake, he was excited with his little pan of tiny cookies. One packet of mix yielded around a dozen nickle-sized chocolate chip cookies. Clean-up was minimal, although it would have been nice if the pans were dishwasher safe. There's even a little storage drawer in the bottom to hold the pans and a couple of mix packets. The only thing I'm having trouble storing well is the paddle. I wish it snapped onto the oven somehow to keep everything together.

We've since made the included cupcake mix, which proved just as exciting for him. The replacement mixes can get a bit pricey, but a quick search for Easy Bake recipes will yield you plenty of alternatives.

1.0 out of 5 stars From One Extreme to Another July 10, 2012

When I was little my sisters and I loved, loved, loved our Easy Bake Oven. Every girl friend and set of girl cousins we had loved their Easy Bake Oven. We learned to create our own mixes and our mothers found extra tiny pans, strangely enough often at the hardware store, that fit inside the oven. So, of course, when my own little girl asked for an Easy Bake Oven. I wanted to rush out and buy her one.

Unfortunately, the cheap bastards at Hasbro had down sized the product until it was The Easy Finger Cremation Device. Not wanting my daughter to lose a finger to an inferior version of the toy I had so loved; I delayed buying an Easy Bake Oven. Christmas 2011, I was thrilled when Hasbro put a new Easy Bake Oven on the market. This Easy Bake Oven was big; maybe bigger than the one my sisters and I used to own. It has an incredibly cool domed shape and it comes in my daughters' favorite color, purple. And look carefully at the oven door in the picture. Doesn't it look roomy? Given even the most basic safety tips, it would be almost impossible for a girl to burn herself with this oven, right?

Well, while it is not impossible for a girl to burn herself on this so called sham of an Easy Bake Oven, the door is NOT real There is no door. This is a shrinky-dink machine for "cupcakes". The pan sizes are much smaller than what I remembered as a kid. You can not supplement with pans of your own. Only the tiny, tray shaped "pans" will fit through the slot that constitutes the working portions of this "oven". The best part (note sarcasm alert) is that the trays get stuck in the slot and the little girl is expected to wiggle it loose and shove it through with a "pan tool". The "pan tool" is a poor substitute for the ability to open an oven door and have the space to remove a pan with a hot mitt. My daughter, my husband, and I were all burned on Christmas morning removing stuck pans from this atrocity of a toy.

I decided not to write my review too soon. I wanted to see if the toy would reveal some redeeming value. Maybe my daughter would love it anyway. Well, it's July and she recently declared that she hates the Easy Bake Oven; that it is not an oven at all and nothing like the Easy Bake Oven she's heard her Aunts and I describe. She hasn't even finished using the mixes that I bought for her for Christmas. She decided to clean and reorganize her room recently. She handed me the Easy Bake Oven and said "I don't want it in my room anymore."

Someone at Hasbro is wondering why sales aren't what they used to be. Hasbro had a working, popular product. First, they let some bean counters ruin it. Then, they sucked all the play value out of the toy. The lack of logic and business acumen is astounding. I find it miraculous that corporations like Hasbro even manage to stay in business.

My recommendation: save yourself some cash and disappointment; do NOT buy.
