This book is a constant source of reference. My copy is so dog-eared I recently purchased a new one. Why Sunset hasn't reprinted it is beyond me. I have yet to find a bad recipe in it. The other night my kids wanted oatmeal cookies. My first thought was my Sunset book. They came out perfect. These recipes are all benchmarks for what the dish should taste like. This book is the basis for cooking. It is the foundation for a great many recipes.

I was given this book approx. 25 years ago and haven't experienced any failures. I still refer to it for some basic recipes.
Not being able to find it locally, I ordered it from Amazon for my son who has left home.
It would have to be the best all-rounder cookbook with great recipes for each area of cooking you want to explore.
It has very clear instructions using easily accessible ingredients.

A wonderful resource for the novice cook (with everything from how to hard boil an egg - DON'T BOIL IT - to how to prepare eggs benedict) and a source of great ideas for the experienced chef. My original copy is so badly worn that I am back for a second. It's my little kitchen bible. BUY IT! If not for you then as a shower gift. The bride-to-be will love you for it.
