I love this cook book and found two copies of it for my daughters.
Penny Moen
It would have to be the best all-rounder cookbook with great recipes for each area of cooking you want to explore.
Birgit Erika
Please, please, please, scream loud and clear that you want the hard cover edition of this book back in print.

This book is a constant source of reference. My copy is so dog-eared I recently purchased a new one. Why Sunset hasn't reprinted it is beyond me. I have yet to find a bad recipe in it. The other night my kids wanted oatmeal cookies. My first thought was my Sunset book. They came out perfect. These recipes are all benchmarks for what the dish should taste like. This book is the basis for cooking. It is the foundation for a great many recipes.

Sunset has dropped the ball on this one. It is the very best cook book that I have used. I was an experiences cook with banquet and wedding experience wien I first found it and I found this book one of the easiest to read and use. Mine is covered with marks and is falling out of its spiral binding but I wouldnt give it up for a minute. Sunset wake up and smell the coffee this is a winner.
Reprint the darn thing before mine is totally gone.

I was given this book approx. 25 years ago and haven't experienced any failures. I still refer to it for some basic recipes.
Not being able to find it locally, I ordered it from Amazon for my son who has left home.
It would have to be the best all-rounder cookbook with great recipes for each area of cooking you want to explore.
It has very clear instructions using easily accessible ingredients.

A wonderful resource for the novice cook (with everything from how to hard boil an egg - DON'T BOIL IT - to how to prepare eggs benedict) and a source of great ideas for the experienced chef. My original copy is so badly worn that I am back for a second. It's my little kitchen bible. BUY IT! If not for you then as a shower gift. The bride-to-be will love you for it.

My mom gave me this book when I moved out on my own and it was a lifesaver! I ordered it for my daughters since it helped me so much. I still use mine from time to time. The recipes are basic and delicious. Some are more challenging but can be done by a beginner and will really build confidence in your cooking skills. There is a wealth of information in addition to the recipes. Conversion charts, Substitutions for ingredients, cooking charts for Vegetables, Meats, eggs etc. The pictures are great too! I remember the first time I served Chicken Kiev to my family, it seemed so fancy I felt like a chef. Everyone loves the banana bread recipe too. I paid about 26.00 for each book and since they haven't been in print since 1985 these were of course used copies. It was sentimental for me so I didn't mind the cost. I've seen some people trying to get over 200.00 for these books. I wouldn't pay that much for them. If I wasn't able to get them for a reasonable price I would just try to find a current cookbook with as many of the great features this one has. Hope this helps :)

I bought this book for my 14 year old daughter. This was the very first cookbook I bought back in my college years (I have now a couple hundred cookbooks).

The book is written in succinct and easy to follow directions. The choice of recopies is sensible and practical showcasing a wide range of skills and anecdotal information for the novice cook. If you are experienced cook this book might be a bit too basic, but for no nonsense cooking nothing beats Sunset.
Thanks,

Daniel

I got this as a gift from my mother in the late 1980s as a wedding present. I knew a little about the kind of "special" cooking kids do while living at home, but nothing about "how to put a meal on the table every single day for the entire year." This book taught me so much about how to do that. It's got a ton of photos and very clearly explained steps for doing everything--so I eventually got brave enough to try Chicken Kiev, which quickly became my favorite; I got so good at it thanks to this book that I could proudly serve this "basics" dish to company at dinner parties! I'm so sorry to see that it's out of print--it's really one of the best basic cookbooks out there.

Nothing in the cookbook was out of my reach; none of the ingredients were hard to find or overly trendy. The food was almost all from-scratch cooking with little of the modern reliance on convenience food. The techniques were so clearly explained that even really new dishes weren't hard to accomplish. Best of all, what I made looked like what the numerous pictures showed. Definitely this is a good cookbook.
