Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4 Up–This compendium of 24 fun and festive cakes will whet readers' appetites for baking during the holiday season, but it's more of a design manual than an actual cookbook (all the recipes use standard cake mix). Instructions include small pan-shaped diagrams describing how to cut and assemble the creations. Ranging from the very easy Santa's Hat and Smiley Snowman to the more elaborate Toy Train and Gingerbread House, decorating tips outline how to use candy and various colors of frosting (two recipes included) for best results. Color photographs accompany each idea.–Madeline J. Bryant, Los Angeles Public Library END

From the Back Cover

Did you know you can create fun Christmas cakes of all shapes and sizes using a few basic cake pans? Two round pans make a reindeer. Two square pans make gingerbread house. A 9 x 13-inch pan makes a fuzzy mitten, Christmas tree, stocking, and Santa Claus. With simple patterns and instructions for cutting the cakes and fitting the pieces together, along with some decorating and frosting tips, you can create amazing cakes that everyone will love. It's a piece of cake with Easy Christmas Cut-Up Cakes for Kids!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for the whole family. Great ideas., March 4, 2011
In an attempt to make the review more "hands on" I picked one of the cakes from the book and created my own "Gift Box Cake" yesterday.

I found the instructions easy to follow. However, I did notice that as I dug deeper into each step some of the details were missing.

For instance, on the cake I made, Melissa said to make a bow for the top of the cake but she did not give step-by-step instructions on how to actually make the bow. I was a little disappointed because I had never made a bow before out of "Fruit by the Foot" or any other material and felt this was a crucial step that should have been elaborated on.

Luckily, I figured it out. Still, the "Little Gift" is so easy that I have no idea why I never thought of it myself.

You get a breakdown of what's needed to create the cake design. For instance, the Candy Cane uses 1 8-inch round cake pan and 1 8-inch square cake pan, a box of white cake mix, a can of white frosting, red "Fruit by the Foot", and red licorice ropes.

Then you get a line drawing (or template) of how to cut the cakes once baked, then step-by-step instructions on how to cut the cake, assemble the pieces, and decorate the cake.

I received a complimentary copy to review.
