5.0 out of 5 stars Hawk chasers
I bought 2 of these owls to keep the hawks away from my baby chicks. My husband put them on tall poles and placed them in my backyard close to the chicken coop (facing the woods where the hawks usually fly out of) I think they are working because I have seen the hawks, but nowhere close to the chicks. Also, the owls' heads spin when there is a little wind. The hawks...

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not work....
..not only does this owl not work in deterring the pesky squirrels that i see rummaging through my trash, but the very same day i put the owl up, i observed a squirrel perched on top of his head!

I can't say enough good things about this. We had birds landing on our roof leaving presents for us to clean up on our deck. Now, the owl keeps them away. I can't speak to deterring squirrels, but it works great for birds.

I would recommend securing it well. Our first try had it falling off the roof.

For the price, you cannot do better!

Gone to fake owls, every one...

For a couple days after I put this owl up, I would see a pigeon or two standing on the roof as far away from the owl as they could, looking nervous. I guess they decided it wasn't worth the risk. They left. It's almost been a month. I wonder if they'll ever get wise. We'll see...

The bobble-head feature seemed like a good idea, and looks pretty "live" when you hold it and shake it, but it doesn't look to me like it bobbles very much up on the roof even with the fin that is supposed to catch the breeze. Definitely doesn't hurt, but I doubt that the bobble-head adds any value.

Starlings are also gone. It took them longer to pack up and leave... maybe a week or two... could have something to do with not wanting to abandon their chicks? Whatever the case, they seem to have finally decided to find a more hospitable environment. No more bird poop on my porch or the side of my house, thanks to this owl!

bird deterrent, horned owl scarecrow- item of expected quality. Appears to deter birds but not squirrels only if moved regularly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Instant Garden Trash, June 21, 2009

I guess that it's no worse and probably a little better than a garden gnome. Sadly, it won't scare away birds any better than a garden gnome, either. While I haven't seen a bird sit on it, they have walked over to it to inspect it. I have tried multiple locations and the only way it will scare birds is if you throw it at them.

Which may be it's best use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, June 19, 2009
This review is from: Easy Gardener 8011 Garden Defense Wind-Action Owl (Lawn & Patio)
I was hoping to keep small birds out of my pool, so I placed this thing nearby and kept moving it around every few days. The head swivels and looks scary enough, but the birds just keep coming back. Now it's just decoration.

Seemed to work for about 2 days, moved it around to different locations, every few days. Then the birds stopped paying attention to it. The birds are as noisy and messy as ever.
