5.0 out of 5 stars Real Italian July 5, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
"This series is brilliant. After starting Volume I of the beginner's course I immediately bought the rest of it from the company. Everything... even "Teach Your Toddler Italian". It is a total immersion approach which gets you speaking the language from the word go. Within a week I was tuning into the RAI News - Italian News Radio - on the internet and found that I could understand a good deal of things if I knew what the story was about. Amazing! What is so good about the package are the different voices. The main voice is clear and precise with a slow deliberate delivery that gives you time to repeat. The three other voices are real Italians speaking real Italian. You soon pick up their different accents and the rapidity of their speech. "Nonna", the course teacher's actual grandmother, is a real character, bless her. Talking ten to the dozen and not suffering fools lightly. "Serena", the teacher's friend, sound so real taking on the different roles of sales assistant, ticket clerk or whoever in the excellent vignettes that are in the Italian for Travelers Series. "Serena" is not a teacher pretending to act out a role. She sounds just like the ordinary people you meet on the street in Italy. And finally, "Sandro", the fruity voiced lothario, straight out of La Dolce Vita. His deep resonant tones bring out the musicality of the language. Each voice trains your ear to understand the rhythm of the language rather than translating into English inside your head. It is possible to listen to the different course elements over and over again without getting bored. Already feel confident that I will be able to do more than just tourist Italian when I go there in a few months times. Also customer service is excellent. Nothing seems to be a problem. You feel like they want to help you get to grips with Italian and they go the extra mile."

5.0 out of 5 stars A good course with outstanding support September 6, 2014
Format:Audio CD
I bought the MP3s for this CD for a cruise to the Mediterranean. I came into this without having studied any Italian, though I speak some French and had studied Latin in college.

Overall, I found this CD informative and entertaining. Instead of merely saying some phrases in English then in Italian like other language courses, Chantal does a good job of emphasizing some common pronunciation errors, emphasizes some useful phrases to use in Italy, and throws in jokes here and there. She also does a good job of pausing after saying each phrase in Italian, giving you the opportunity to repeat the phrases as needed.

Having said all that, there were two things I didn't like about the CD. First, I thought that the later tracks focused too much on conversational Italian when it would have been more helpful to learn what English speakers could do to get by without a command of the language. For example, in the track about going to a restaurant, one of the first phrases that I'd need is "do you have a menu in English?" Instead, the CD focuses on getting a table, responding to expected wait times, etc. Secondly, I agree with a previous reviewer that sometimes the phrases can get a little hard to understand. It was sometimes tough to tell the difference between some of the consonant sounds.

So why 5 stars instead of 3 or 4? I had seen Chantal's response to a bad review here and tried emailing her for help with the issues I mentioned earlier. She's incredibly helpful and friendly. She provided me with a transcript of all of the Italian phrases on the CD (which helped me distinguish some of the consonant sounds) as well as translations for the phrases which I mentioned that I wished were on the CD. I couldn't have asked for better after-the-purchase service. Thanks Chantal!

4.0 out of 5 stars A gift. February 28, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
A friend is headed to Italy for a trip and I bought him an mp3 player/recorder to keep notes and then loaded this in. He's not going for about a month so it gives him a chance to learn a little Italian before he goes. I also loaded it to my own mp3 player so I can learn and we can practice together. From what I heard, it seems okay.

1.0 out of 5 stars How to learn Italian if you know Italian July 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I found the CD hard to understand. this CD was not geared for the novice. I think the words should be spoken more slowly as well as broken into syllables for better comprehension. This CD is geared as a refresher for anyone familiar with Italian and is not for the novice. I thought I would learn to speak conversational Italian for beginners. I could not understand how to pronounce some of the words. I would not recommend this CD for a beginner.
