4.0 out of 5 stars The Real Rock, September 9, 2003
This review is from: Easy Listening (Audio CD)
This is the kind of release that you don't see much anymore. It's like a Kinks, or Stones, or Who, or even Replacements record, with Midwestern heavy rock set next to more thoughtful stuff. Great tunes straight through from the rollicking opener to the somber end.

What sets it apart from nouveau garage is that it's not willfully dumb (Hives, Sahara Hotnights) or conceptually self-conscious (the White Stripes, the Strokes, the Mooney Suzuki).

A perfect companion to that other recent piece of Clevelandiana, "American Splendor." And no, I've never even set foot in Cleveland.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner From Cobra Verde, September 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Easy Listening (Audio CD)
Easy Listening is another winner from Cobra Verde. This band gets "it". What's "it"? I haven't the foggiest idea. But you know "it" when you hear "it" and "it" is here, (as it is on all the other CV albums and most of J.P.'s Death of Samantha" stuff as well). This Lp takes the best "glam" parts of their "Nightlife" Lp and mixes it with the harder rock crunch of their earlier releases, (Especially "Vive Le Muerte"). Big rock guitars, melody, hooks, lyrically astute...Easy Listening is a can't miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern classic!!, May 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Easy Listening (Audio CD)
I usually don't write reviews, but this CD is so great I have to. I bought it up after reading about the band in Blender.I had not listened to them before ... and now I'm so glad I did! This CD is an instant classic, a brilliant mixing of glittery pop, post-punk and new wave. The lyrics, especially, are amazing (where else will you hear existentially poetic lines like "When you are down/I will look up to you" or twisted love lyrics like "Was it the tear gas, was it the perfume/That killed my senses when you crashed into the room?"). It's deep, but not too heavy. The songs are irresistibley catchy, especially "Riot Industry" and "My Name is Nobody." I can't get them out of my head - or CD player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good little album here, April 6, 2005
This review is from: Easy Listening (Audio CD)
I'm from Cleveland and have actually seen these dudes a couple of times. They put on a really good show so I bought a cd from them(By the way they're pretty cool guys too.)

This album is just an all around good rock album. About as fast and hard as Weezer, but not as happy(sorry couldn't really think of a word.) By far the best song is Til Sunrise. That song can get stuck in you head for hours.

This album probably isn't for the mainstream-only fans, but for anyone who is looking for a rock solid album, I'd recommend picking this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detroit? I'm going to Cleveland!, May 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Easy Listening (Audio CD)
What a great release. I've been looking forward to this CD since hearing some of the songs when I caught Cobra Verde on tour (with the Breeders) and I am NOT disappointed! The disc is full of hooks that refuse to let go, smart lyrics, swagger, swing, and the musical muscle to twist that (diamond-studded) knife and break it off in you. This is a drunken all-night romp at your favorite dive chasing that chick you're hot for. Sure, the chick's gonna blow you off again but what the hell...at least the jukebox kicks... Easy Listening deserves a place alongside all the other for-real Rock Classics in your collection. Recommended!
