4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of prep work--but worth it!, July 11, 2007

This review is from: Easy Literature-Based Quilts Around the Year (Grades K-3) (Paperback)
I used this book with a pre-K classroom so there was a lot of cutting and prep work that I needed to do before presenting the quilts in the book. To be speific, the children need 1"-2" squares, triangles etc. (cut from wallpaper or fabric) in order to do these projects. This required a lot of prep work (and exactness--in regard to the sizes of the squares or triangles--otherwise they would not fit onto the quilt block precisely). I did LOVE the final outcome of these projects and the children were very proud! I found it simple to incorporate geometry, patterning sorting, shape identification and literature into my quilt making unit. This one is worth the purchase if you have the time to prep.

5.0 out of 5 stars My copy is worn out!!, January 15, 2011
This review is from: Easy Literature-Based Quilts Around the Year (Grades K-3) (Paperback)
I have used this book for ten years with first, second, and third graders. There are different quilt block patterns for every month. I think I have made all of them at one time or another. There is quite a bit of prep, but once you have done it a few times it gets easier. You can use construction paper, wall paper, wrapping paper, or scrapbook paper with beautiful results. The end product is quite stunning and I always get compliments on the finished product. I like that there are two options for each quilt and the suggested stories to go along with each are excellent choices. I have modified the writing prompts for older students.
I ususally do a quilt unit every year and this is a fun and motiviating way for the students to create their own quilt. There is so much history, math, art, and literature that can be tied in with a unit on quilts. It's one of my favorite things to teach, and this book is a great resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Craft, September 25, 2010

This review is from: Easy Literature-Based Quilts Around the Year (Grades K-3) (Paperback)
I teach Kindergarten and came across many students who do not know what a quilt is. My students enjoyed learning about quilts and I brought in real ones to show them before we began our first project. This book is good because it gives two choices for books to use each month, provides pictures to show what the finished product should look like, and sentence starters. I decided to take multiple sessions to put the quilt together in order to have the students do most of the work. I used construction paper instead of wallpaper and this turned out great. I would recommend getting the book if you like doing crafts that can be tied in with the curriculum.
