Editorial Reviews

2013 release from this band comprised of lap steel guitar master Damon Fowler, guitarist extraordinaire JP Soars, and keyboard wizard Victor Wainwright. With echoes of Muscle Shoals and Macon, these dynamic young sons of Dixie draw on their rich heritage of Southern soul, blues, and rock music to create a fresh translation of Americana and Southern roots music with a modern sensibility. In the words of BluesWax, ''Southern Hospitality, after a single gig, has significant players in the blues world taking notice. Fowler, Wainwright and Soars share much love for the songs of the South. The hot jazz and funk of New Orleans, classic country, gospel, soul, and blues that became rock 'n' roll in Memphis and went global by way of a trucker named Elvis.''

Super group projects are often a crap shoot- some work, but expectations are usually set too high. In 1973, John Hammond Jr., Dr. John and Mike Bloomfield recorded "Triumvirate" together, and while you couldn't call this effort "bad", all three agreed the recording was far less than satisfactory. The "Super Blues Band" of Muddy, Wolf and Bo Diddley looks great on paper, but most fans agree that the two discs by this group are short on inspiration and long on shenanigans.

The members of Southern Hospitality have patterned themselves after the Traveling Wilburys, and it works. We have three young southern Blues men who are successful band leaders in their own right, but they blend styles to create music unlike anything else being played today. South Florida's J.P. Soars actually started out in the metal world, then discovered the Gypsy Jazz of Django Reinhardt. He has also developed, and mastered the two string shoe-box guitar.

Florida native Damon Fowler is unique- his Country leanings set him apart from most Blues guitarists. He played one of the best versions of "Crosscut Saw" I've ever heard live, yet he can croon "Third Rate Romance" by the Amazing Rhythm Aces and be just as convincing. He sings in a higher, conversational tenor which shows his country sensibilities. His lap steel also reflects this influence; more Lloyd Maines than Duane Allman.

Victor Wainwright, the "Piana From Savannah" plays some of the hottest boogie heard today- his singing reminds me of the late great Memphian Jim Dickinson (maybe Wainwright fronting a band on Beale Street is responsible).

Recently the South has seen the emergence of a musical group of young musicians who are masters of their craft and embody the soul and spirit of Dixie. Or as Blues Revue said, "There's a new entity in the blues world, a diverse, powerful group with enormous potential."

The Band creating all the buzz, called Southern Hospitality, is comprised of lap steel guitar master Damon Fowler who adds a swampy Allman style slide, guitarist extraordinaire JP Soars with his gypsy jazz style , and keyboard wizard Victor Wainwright with his honkytonk propulsion style.

Jam and roots, Delta blues, Memphis soul, Boogie-Woogie and Funky grooves, this band has a laid back exterior but is all business, there is a wonder of musicianship that surrounds them, three legitimate frontmen, all of them with unique vocal styles. They share a great soulful harmony that flows beyond the music.

I read...

BluesWax said of their show, "Southern Hospitality, after a single gig, has significant players in the blues world taking notice. Fowler, Wainwright and Soars share much love for the songs of the South. The hot jazz and funk of New Orleans, classic country, gospel, soul, and blues that became rock 'n' roll in Memphis and went global by way of a trucker named Elvis."

This is not your typical contemporary blues rock release. These are musician's musicians, "their mutual chemistry, high energy and musical talents create a cohesive vision." Prolific songwriters, this is a fine representation of the South.

Love this new album from "super group" Southern Hospitality. Damon Fowler never disappoints and shines brightly on Kind Lies and Whisky, Don't Feel Like Going There Today and Powered for the Mountain. Really makes me long for a new album from the Damon Fowler Group. Victor Wainwright channels hot old school soul on Certified Lover and reminds us all why he's been nominated for the 2013 BMA Pinetop Perkins Piano Player award on Don't Boogie Woogie. JP Soars and his signature guitar licks are happily out in full force on Powered for the Mountain. The boys all come together nicely on Southern Livin and Sky is What I Breathe. This album is a great showcase for all three musicians and a great addition to the collection of all three artist's work. Producer Tab Benoit has done Southern Hospitality proud! This album will make you want to get a date on the calendar to see Southern Hospitality live and in person fo sho! Great stuff!

browsing the only blues station around(on tv only, nothing like this in south jersey)heard "don't feel like going there today" WOW! I'm listening to blues/reggae and superb musicians. Ordered this cd immediately and well worth the price. I'm having visions of Dr.John("coming back home") and Stevie Ray/Fab T-Birds/ and everyone a well rounded blues person could ask for. I know Amy Winehouse is smiling in heaven and wishes she had recorded "don't feel like going there today". Kudos to you Southern Hospitality Group you got the soul &sound. the instrumental "fried neck bones" Santana applauds you. The music you though you could only be lucky enough to hear at a backwoods bayou bar is here and lives in the ecclective combo of music southern hospitality has created.Thank you damon,jp,victor, chuck, chris and of course Tab Benoit. SUPERB MUSIC RUN DON'T WALK. AND GET IT, Y'ALL!! TRULY FABULOUS AND A MUST FOR ALL BLUES/SOUTHERN ROCK/SOUL FOLKS OUT THERE--IT IS ALIVE IN SOUTHERN HOSPTALITY. p.s. cd came in great condition and in a timely fashion from dealer called Streetlike Records. from J. in cape may,n.j.
