Depending on what you're looking for, you may or may not like this calendar...
In the past, I've folded some medium to somewhat advanced Origami models. With that in mind, I still liked the idea of folding easy, daily models: something I could do quickly during short breaks at work. Now that I see the first week's models, I'm disappointed. They ARE easy, but that also means the end results are less interesting and/or less recognizable. Second: Like many people who enjoy Origami, I'm a "purist" in that I like and respect the tradition of always starting with a square piece of paper (which IS true of this calendar's Origami), but ALSO that scissors should not be used. I was disappointed to find that the model for Jan. 5 requires scissors, both to finish the wings of the Dove model, but also to scallop the edges of the wings. I suspect the author resorted to scissors to "cut corners" (pun intended). That is: If you've only got a small amount of space per day for folding instructions, but want a "nice" end result model like a dove, resorting to a single step that uses scissors definitely avoids many more folding-only steps to achieve the same result (as a "purist" would prefer). If you're not a "purist" and are looking for an easy introduction to Origami, this might be what you want. Alas it's not what I personally was hoping for...

This calendar is awesome. It comes with 365+ pieces of colored paper to do your origiami. It's bright, colorful and each day you fold something new! Personally, I bought this to aid my quest of folding 1000 paper cranes to make a Senbazuru one day and thus far it is helping tremendously. On top of that, I've learned to make a bunch of other fun animals. This calendar rocks!

Good callendar, poor case/holder,

This callendar is ok, origami are simple (easy, as explained in the title of the product). The holder leaves something to be desired, it is constructed of cardboard with embedded magnets, sheathed only by a magazine like paper film. The callendar I ordered showed up damaged (requiring a fix with some clear scotch tape) even though the outside shipping container had no visible signs of damage or abuse. Overall i'd say this is a good product for folks (especially kids) who enjoy crafts or appreciate origami. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this a gift for a professional, or co-worker, that they would display in their workspace or office area.

Great calendar; beware of mistakes in instructions,

This origami calendar has a looseleaf format instead of being a padded block with glue along the top, so every page comes out flat and pristine. It also turns into its own great fold-up stand to hold the pages, and has separate "tab sheets" with bases and fundamental folds. Easily the best format of word-a-day "build something" calendar I've seen.
The model for January 1 (the very first page) has an error in step 4 which was frustrating at first (the fold line is in the wrong place). I had the calendar open on my desk and thought I'd practice with the easy first model. Luckily I had already bought the calendar and discovered its other virtues, or I might have been put off. A little thinking (and close inspection of the step 5 picture) made it clear how to make the model. I couldn't find an obvious errata section on the publisher's site, so we'll just have to keep an open mind. The good news is that if an instruction doesn't make sense, it might not be your fault! Recommended overall. |
