5.0 out of 5 stars Learning/Making Music on Your DS/DSi May 1, 2010
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is a very simple application, but for its intended audience, it is terrific. Easy Piano teaches you basic music theory, starting from notation, to tempo, to rhythm, and so on. Unfortunately, it stops at making harmonic chord, so you'll have to learn it on your own. The program does allow you to make a 3 note harmonic chord, so this isn't a big problem.

In addition to music lessons along with mini-games, you also gets to practice songs. There are 4 categories. Good selection of songs there. You have to unlock the songs, but fortunately, the game provides 2 levels of difficulties. I still hate it that you have to unlock them, though. Why can't they just provide all the songs immediately. I'm rather surprised by some of the Pop songs provided. Madonna's Material Girl is in there!

The last section is writing your own song, and it is here that the program shines. Although there are good music programs out there, such as Korg DS plus, and WarioWare DIY, this one allows you to just jam the notes using the keyboard. It also includes Metronome sound, so you can play the music according to tempo. There are minimal editing function, but what's there is enough to create your own music.

The difference of interface between this and others is that with Easy Piano, you just play in real time (you can drop notes on screen as well, not necessarily in real time) and that makes it very easy to compose songs. No need to learn what a "phrase" is. No need to jump to different screens to organize such phrases. Just jam on the keyboard provided! You can also use the on-screen keyboard, although if you go that route, you lose the ability to put harmonic notes. Yes, you can do harmonic with the keyboard, up to 3 notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised August 24, 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Since there was no picture of this on Amazon, I had no idea it came with a mini keyboard. The hands-on learning really makes all the difference in the world. I would not have been too confident in the products ability to really tutor people in this w/o the keyboard. Though mind you, the keyboard is far from the standard keyboard.

It's great for me being that I'm re-learning basic piano I learned as a child. My boyfriend, who's also a musician gets a kick out it being able to compose on it.

EXCELLENT Program!

3.0 out of 5 stars Too simple August 25, 2011
Verified Purchase
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Although useful for an absolute beginner, the software is absurdly low-level. There are only ten lessons, and they stop pretty quickly after showing the notes in treble and bass clef.

In the main gameplay mode, it doesn't even look much like sheet music - as if halfway through designing the program, the developers decided they wanted to compete with Guitar Hero rather than create actual music software. Not only that, but the grading system is way too lenient - giving a round of applause and 99% rating after a session where over half of the notes were merely "correct" rather than accurately timed.

Another big flaw in all modes is that the notes are color-coded; there's no way to turn this off. I found myself reading by color rather than where the notes were placed on the staff.

I am disappointed in this software, as it had the potential to be much more useful than this. I wish that the keyboard could be used with a more advanced learning program. As-is, its best use is probably for introducing small children to music before deciding to get them regular lessons. I'm glad I didn't pay the original retail price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the game!!!!! August 13, 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The game is fun. I bought it to try and help me enhance my piano skills. Keys are small but I still find the game enjoyable. I like the fact that you can slow the tempo down and play at your own level. I would recommend this game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing December 14, 2010
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this at another store (local) for our niece and nephew to learn to play music with, as they love their game systems and love to listen to music. Unfortunately what is not obvious and may not even be in the fine print on the outside of the box is that you cannot connect the keyboard to the newer DS game systems. The cartridge itself will apparently work, as others have mentioned using it amongst the reviews posted here, but not being able to plug in the keyboard was a big dissapointment for them and me, so I returned it to the store from which I had purchased it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring and Short September 21, 2012

Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game hoping to learn to play piano, but there are very few lessons and they aren't so long. Unfortunately, the lessons are also a bit boring. I give it 2 stars for being kind of a neat idea and having a few lessons. However, this tiny, tiny keyboard does not effectively simulate the experience of using a real keyboard or piano.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save up for a new game, don't waste your money. December 11, 2013

I would not waste the time or money to order this again. Sometimes a deal that just "too good to be true" really is just that too good to be true. This was cheap and I was on a budget so I thought I would buy it for my kids. The game is really out dated, the kids tried to be nice, but really didn't seem to interested in it. I would say save up and buy a more current game and you'll feel better not having wasted your money, and your kids will feel better having a gift they can actually use.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great item for the musical mind.
This really was a unique twist for a young mind curious to learn how to play music. It helped with the basics and now the child is a wiz on the clarinet.
