5.0 out of 5 stars Great crossover novella, January 6, 2012
By
cyancra (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
In this story, two strong female characters from two different urban fantasy series meet in the New Orleans of an alternative world, pulled there to help save the city. Joanne Walker, shaman(from C.E. Murphy's The Walker Papers), and Jane Yellowrock, vampire hunter (from Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series), have to work together to solve the mysterious magic in the other-world New Orleans so they can return to their own worlds. The alternating point of view allows us to see how each character reacts to the other, which is one of the most fun parts of the book if you are a fan of the two series.

If you aren't familiar with the series, you can still enjoy the exciting story while meeting two of the most interesting characters in urban fantasy. This is a fun and inexpensive way to check out these two great authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan Fiction by The Authors Themselves!, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
When two authors get together to write their own fan fiction good

things happen. Jane Yellowrock and Joanne Walker find themselves in a

not-quite-theirs universe in a New Orleans that has a dark presence

hanging over it. Working together they have to figure out what is

going on before they can find a way home. Two of the liveliest

heroines with wicked sharp wit and kickass attitudes come together in

a story that is a brilliant combination of two amazing authors. You'll

be cheering the girls on while they clean up NOLA and save the day as

a butt-stomping team.

5.0 out of 5 stars The world disappeared..., January 6, 2012
This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
When I read this story, the world literally disappeared for me. Of course, Joanne and Jane aren't *quite* in their own world either, so I was in excellent company. I love how the characters interacted with each other. They are both very strong characters, and lost nothing in this crossover story. In fact, they work very well together, each one offering something very unique to the partnership. The story was fast paced and exciting, the dialogue witty, and well worth a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story and Fans of Either Series Will Love It., January 7, 2012

This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
I finished Easy Pickings which is a crossover novel of Jane Yellowrock series and Joann Walker series (which I have never read but will add to my list) and it was GREAT, you don't have to be a fan of both series to enjoy it, but seems that you might find it a small bit more enjoyable if you were but I loved it. The basic premise is that they are both pulled into an alternate universe where New Orleans is NOT the one either of them know and they have to save it (no you don't get the details) and the usual mayhem occurs. Good read after Raven Cursed: A Jane Yellowrock Novel and that probably added to my enjoyment since I got to read them back to back. For its length and originality I would say it was a 4+ Star (rounded to 5 for this review) read for what amounts to a short novella or a long "short" story . The ending was a nice touch .

NOTE: The timeline for this story would be after Raven Cursed: A Jane Yellowrock Novel and is FAR in the future of The Walker Papers (like after book 8) according to the authors

5.0 out of 5 stars Volley, Game, Set, Match, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
The idea's pretty cute -- two authors write fanfic about their own characters meeting. C. E. Murphy brings Joanne Walker and Faith Hunter brings Jane Yellowrock. If you're a fan of both series, it's a definite win. You get a story about a character you already love, plus the amusement of seeing that character through fresh eyes. And if you haven't read, say, anything by Faith Hunter? That's where I was, and I was still totally charmed by this book. Jane's a neat character, it was fun meeting her, and the story's good. The plot goes beyond the pitch concept; there's an interesting story, a very interesting world, and I kind of want to read more of this.

So: recommended to fans of both authors, fans of one author, and people who just like New Orleans paranormal stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two Authors, Two Different Takes on Kick-Butt Women, February 18, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
Two different women. Totally different women, both with the ability to shape shift, meet in New Orleans. A vastly different New Orleans than we know. One where Hurricane Katrina hasn't hit and businesses that were there yesterday are gone today. One in which the cities top Vamp is now alive instead of permanently dead at the hand of Jane Yellowrock. But it is not Joannes world either. Through a portal they walked the two of them and out of the portal came three and as three they must face an evil power mad Vamp and his minions. Including a stinky Velociraptor type creature. Hopefully they will find there way to their prospective homes and soon!

A unique novella employing both C.E. Murphy's - Joanne Walker(Walkingstick) and Faith Hunter's - Jane Yellowrock characters from their respective series. With both women characters having the ability to shape shift, but only Joanne having Shamanic powers, it makes for an interesting creative collaboration both for the characters and for the authors. You can see which chapters were written by which author quite clearly. While both Joanne and Jane are totally kick-butt characters, each woman is different enough personality wise to please almost any reader.

This is a great book to read if you like either author, both authors or just want to try someone new. As a stand alone I don't think a new reader will have a problem getting into it and then grasping what is going on and hopefully the new reader will come out of the experience with two new author to add to their libraries!

It's hard to add to all the other glowing reviews which covered the details but I really had to add that the best part of the story for me, besides two of my favorite heroines, was the seamless integration by the authors into one storyline.

You usually can tell when you have two separate people writing but in Easy Pickings, you would SWEAR it was one author, one voice and add the fact that it is a WONDERFUL voice to read, you can't go wrong.

I have to say too that since I have read all of the books of both series, I had never made the connection regarding the fact that both Joanne and Jane basically look alike, have the same Cherokee background, and could be mistaken for sisters - maybe they were separated at birth?? Hmmm... this collaboration was a beautiful thing and I would love to see more "cross overs" in the future.

Now, if you aren't a fan of each of Jane and Joanne's series, what are you waiting for? Go pick them up today!

I love crossover books, mixing authors and worlds can be difficult but these two authors make it easy. At least easy to read. CE Murphy and Faith Hunter's characters get to mix it up and kick some supernat butts on a different dimension than their own. What was unique is that Jane Yellowrock (Faith Hunter's character), comes from a different dimension in her books than Joanne Walker ( CE Murphy's character) does in Murphy's books to begin with. So these two charcters will never meet on the street or call each other up on the phone to chat unless someone does a bit of magic and one ends up crossing over to the other. Very well done.

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!

I love these two series and having a cross over novella is this fan girl's dream. It's always fun to hear that two talented, wonderful authors are fans of each others and when they come together and write "fan fic", it's a dream come true.

I think that this would be a great start for anyone interested in trying the two series. It reveals just enough to interest and introduce a new reader. For current readers, this is a bonus :)

I don't want to say too much b/c the story was fantastic. Let's just say that I really hope Ms. Murphy and Hunter collaborate again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh shazam!!!, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Easy Pickings (Kindle Edition)
Yay!!!! Not only is this a super cheap read for my Kindle which already makes it awesome, but it's a super cheap read by one of my very most favorite authors, the lovely Ms. Murphy!!! I saw this and had to buy instantaneously. Looking forward to getting a taste of Faith Hunter, as I've been intrigued by a co-op between these authors since I stumbled upon a dialogue between the authors on Catie's site. I know without a doubt that this book will be fantastic. Go buy it yourself now! I must rush off to eagerly snatch up my Kindle.... :)
