SOUNDTRACK OF 69,
By
This review is from: Easy Rider: Music From The Soundtrack (1969 Film) (Audio CD)
"Music From The Soundtrack EASY RIDER" is actually the soundtrack of a culture. "A man went looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere..."Two of STEPPENWOLF's best songs are included here, "The Pusher" and "Born To Be Wild". An interesting side note is that Hoyt Axton is the writer of "The Pusher". The Band's song "The Weight", from their 1968 album "Music From Big Pink" was performed in the motion picture but was not available for the soundtrack. Smith's recording of "The Weight" is included on the soundtrack, and they do an excellant job worthy of Robbie Robertson's respect. "Wasn't Born To Follow" by The Byrds is here. One of Jimi Hendrix's masterpiece's, "If Six Was Nine", is included. Roger McGuinn, from The Byrds, covers Bob Dylan's'"It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." Roger McGuinn is also given credit for "The Ballad Of Easy Rider", although Bob Dylan wrote the words while Roger McGuinn put the music to it. "If You Want To Be A Bird" by The Holy Modal Rounders is pretty weird and a country music song about bogarting a joint, "Don't Bogart Me" by Fraternity Of Man, is just strange. But all in all, the music holds up quite well. If you like THE BYRDS, BOB DYLAN & THE BAND, THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, and STEPPENWOLF, then you will love this collection of songs. As a teen I remember searching far and wide, in countless used record emporiums, for this album. I snatched up every copy I could get hold of. Now, at age 38, I still have one remaining LP in a protective plastic sleeve and the newly released CD version. I'm so happy, I could just $#!+.

This CD is chock full of the great music from the film Easy Rider. I have this import CD from a few years ago, but the sound quality is very bad. The CD was reissued in the US in 2000, with the original cover. I don't have that CD yet, but I strongly suggest getting it instead of this one in hopes that the sound will be better.

Memories of my youthful rebellious stage.,

The movie was one of the defining motion pictures of my teen age years. The music augmented perfectly the movie. The soundtrack was a bit less than satisfactory with the omission of "The Weight" by the Band and the substitution of the song by Smith, but it was only a minor flaw. I had played the vinyl album a multitude of times so that it was pretty much unplayable and it was with some satisfaction that I was able to find it on CD. I would recommend the movie and the sound track to anyone who wants a taste of the '60s.

Electric Prunes, anyone?,

Ahhhh, memories. Who can ever forget the countless times we all sang along with the Fraternity on "Don't Bogart Me", or cranking up the volume to hear the Panheads roar through three gears right before Steppenwolf crashes into "Born To Be Wild"? Smith's rendition of "The Weight" on the soundtrack is still easy to listen to, and Robbie and the boys should feel complemented. When Jimi rapped his way through "If Six Were Nine", we related to the hatred we inspired in all the " white collar conservatives flashing down the street.." My favorite is still the " Kyrie" from the latin mass by the Prunes. Wah-Wah pedals still rule in my rock book. Old vinyl gone, lost, stolen? Go for it again. You'll be glad you did.

This is a fine album of classic rock music. I like to take the CD camping for my own fireside pleasure (recalling that awesome Jack Nicholson mental image moment), and to irritate the old curmudgeons on the adjoining campsites. The best thing about the cuts on this one is that they practically cover a history of 60s rock sounds. You'll be much pleased with this purchase if you're really into the classic rock music experience. It's a true and accurate reflection of the era.

The soundtrack of Easy Rider is in many ways an important one.It was one of the first films to use rock music as a base for film. That would have been just nice if the songs weren't great, but fortunately the songs themselves are great. It contains the ultimate biker song "Born To Be Wild" as well as Hendrix's classic "If 6 Was 9".
There's one strange thing about this soundtrack though. The song "The Weight" from The Band isn't sung by The Band but by Smith which makes it less interresting to listen to.And there are songs from Bob Dylan that are sung by Roger McGuinn,it is said that Dylan didn't like the ending of the movie and therefore didn't want to have his voice on the soundtrack. Anyway, despite these points it truly is a great album. The lesser known songs are just as great, listen to "Wasn't Born To Follow" and "Kyrie Eleison" for some great psychedelic sound. The two absurd tracks "Bird" and "Bogart" are very funny, but are even funnier when you see the movie. A soundtrack classic that everyone should own.

Man, this one is even better than the "Graduate" and "Midnight Cowboy" soundtracks. You don't have to have seen the movie to love these songs, but it sure helps. This has got some of everything from the time, and it's all equally good. You get country-rock with "Wasn't born to follow" and "Ballad of easy rider". Stoner-rock with "The Pusher" and "Don't bogart me". And just great classic-rock with "If 6 was 9" and "The Weight". Oh, and there's this other song called "Born to be Wild". Now all you need is a good long open road, and "Captain America's jacket.

These songs (and Easy Rider itself) typify the '60 for those of us who llived this era. The movie, although not a masterpiece, represented the bold search to "find" ones self. The music brings back the memories of that movie as though it were yesterday. If you are a "boomer", you need this album

Works... in combination with "The Trip",

Contains _most_ of the music from the film. But is missing one key track: "Flash, Bam, Pow" by Electric Flag (played in the film as Wyatt and Billy ride away from New Orleans after the LSD sequence and before Wyatt concludes, "We blew it" during the final campfire scene). The missing Electric Flag track can be found only on the CD soundtrack to "The Trip" -- a Peter Fonda film written by Jack Nicholson which itself contains some pretty cool music.

When I saw the movie "Easy Rider" in the late sixties, I was totally blown away. The ending was so shocking to me that I walked out of the theatre in a daze. I bought the video and recently watched it again for the umpteenth time wondering where I could find the soundtrack after so many years. I stopped wondering when I found it on Amazon.com. The music is just as good today as it was then. If you want to take yourself and your memories down "Sixties Lane" buy this CD. It makes me want to get on a chopper and ride, bay-bay, ride...
