Book Description

February 9, 2012

This book offers simple, delicious recipes that utilize foods that have a proven track record of enhancing health or offering protection from diseases.

It can be a challenge to discern which foods really do form a healthy diet, let alone how to prepare them into delicious dishes without too much time, fuss, and expense.

5 Easy Steps to Healthy Cooking offers the solution. Vastly different from a diet book, this simplified, five-step approach to healthy eating is holistic and flexible. This is healthy cooking from a very different perspective: because it is first and foremost a cookbook, not a diet book, it begins and ends with enticing, easy-to-prepare recipes that make the five principles simple and doable.

The five principles are:

  • Choose Fresh, Whole Foods
  • Eat Mostly Vegetable and Fruit-Based Foods
  • Opt for Healthy Fats and Proteins
  • Select Superfoods (Nutrient-Dense Foods)
  • Eat More Whole Grains

These recipes incorporate the five principles and will help you build your own perfect diet:

  • Quinoa-Cashew Power Balls, Spicy, Crispy Roasted Chickpeas
  • Tuna and Asparagus Frittata, Spicy Salsa Joes
  • Soba with Shrimp, Lime and Cilantro
  • Braised Baby Bok Choy, Thai Curry Pumpkin Soup
  • Sweet Potato Bisque with West Indian Spices

The actions and choices we make at the market, in our kitchens, and around the dining table can affect our health (for better or for worse) and are the most powerful steps we can take toward well-being. And remember no one food can make you healthy on its own -- aim instead for a varied and balanced diet. The diversity of the recipes in this collection offers ways to enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods throughout the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy, healthy, and delicious? Sign me up! May 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
With "5 Easy Steps to Healthy Cooking," Camilla Saulsbury achieved something that I once thought was impossible: She actually convinced my husband (who would live on pizza and burgers, if allowed) that healthy foods and delicious foods are not mutually exclusive things. I'd gotten used to preparing two separate dinners every night -- a healthier one for me, and a heartier one for him, but thanks to recipes such as "Cuban Chicken with Black Beans and Brown Rice,"Japanese Ginger Beef Bowls," and "Pumpkin, Sausage, and Smoked Gouda Pizza," my husband is actually enthusiastic about the prospect of eating healthy. In addition to dinners, there are recipes for breakfast, snacks, lunches, bread, and even dessert. I haven't tried any of the sweets yet, but those Cocoa Truffles made with dates are calling my name.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooking from this alone! May 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I haven't cooked much in the last three years since having a child and working full-time. My partner has never cooked in his life. Since discovering this cookbook, we've both been having fun cooking up a storm almost exclusively using this book. The recipes are straightforward, easy, healthy, and delicious--all things we were looking for. You really can't go wrong with this cookbook. Even if cookbooks seem outdated (because there are so many recipes online), this is one you will definitely get a lot of use out of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Healthy Cookbook ever August 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Almost every recipe in here has been a hit with my family. They ask for the steak tacos, tofu berry shakes, and hot shrimp noddles bowls all the time. Not a lot of fuss to prepare the recipes and I have been able to find almost everything at my local grocery store, except brown rice syrup which was down the street at the health food store.

I also thought the recipes weren't overly expensive either, in fact quite frugal. It has helped us practice portion control with only 4 servings and our family five. I "pad" the ingredients just a little to make it five servings.

We like this cookbook so much we pre-ordered her up-coming quinoa cookbook.
