About the Author

Laura Santtini is a writer who cooks. Much of her passion for food comes from her Italian grandmother, as well as her parents who launched the renowned Italian restaurant Santini in London's Belgravia. Famed for being Frank Sinatra's all-time favourite, Santini celebrates 25 years this year and remains synonymous with authentic Italian food, premium quality ingredients and simple understated designer surroundings. Laura's early career was in PR, with Lynn Franks, then at MTV Europe where she worked with international stars all over the world. Laura moved to Milan where she was a freelance event producer. In 2002 she returned to re-launch Santini following her father's retirement. She is now also pursuing her writing, television and food consultancy work. This is a sumptuously presented book by Laura Santtini, which provides a thought-provoking, if somewhat pretentious, approach to the planning and presentation of Italian cuisine. Would-be purchasers need to be aware that the title is rather misleading -- many of the recipes here are neither easy to prepare, using ingredients that can be decidedly trick to source; nor do some of them have much to do with traditional Italian cookery. There is no denying, however, that almost without exception, for those with the patience to persevere, these recipe are indeed tasty!

The big value in the book though derives largely from the way Ms Santtini writes about food and her thinking behind the selection of ingredients, and how these can be combined to delight and entice the jaded palette. Not one for beginners, or for purists, then, but well worth a look for the adventurous.

I loved the unique quality of this cookbook. Laura is doing something that no one else does and that makes it exciting. While some of it is a bit pretentious (edible gold and silver?), I found her techniques of flavor bombing dishes to be interesting (think of pesto in a bowl of minestrone as an example of a flavor bomb) as well as her herb and spice blends and salts (some she calls stardust) that use unique ingredients (like edible flowers)to be a bit outside of my level of cooking expertise but fascinating nonetheless.

Her invention of Taste #5 Umami Paste was what brought me to her cookbooks. I bought the paste online and then discovered this cookbook. Laura is half-Italian and half-British and her father Gino Santin started the beloved Santini's restaurant in London.

It's unusual to find chef's doing innovative things with Italian food so I checked out this book and was glad I did.

I love the Umami paste and have an interest in her entire range of seasoning products but alas they are only available in Europe at this time (aside from the Umami paste). The cookbook shows many recipes where the paste can be used as well as some fairly simple antipasti, pasta dishes and desserts.

The cookbook itself is gorgeous with nearly a photo for every recipe plus some quirky photos too that give a good idea of Laura's vibrant personality. Why she does not have a cooking show I will never understand because she's relate-able, comfortable in front of the camera and exudes charm. I would love to watch her make magick with her recipes!

This is a cookbook I will go back to again and again. It's really gorgeous. And it was on sale at amazon.com for less than $10. I mean, whoa. It's worth twice that easily.

Great recipes that are a little unusual. For example the chicken breast filled with parmesan cheese and a sprig of fresh rosemary wrapped in prosciutto were easy to make, yet looked beautiful and were absolutely delicious.
