A roundabout route for a decent product, December 28, 2009
This review is from: EasyCap DC60++ Audio/Video Capture -Supports Mac & Vista64 (Electronics)
I asked for this for Christmas since I was interested in recording gameplay or video footage on my television. I use a Mac, and while I have Windows in bootcamp, I wanted tor record footage on my OSX partition since it had more space and video editing tools (Adobe suite from my school). I looked around and saw different methods and prices for capturing video, and this seemed like the most cost effective way with decent quality. The price is a bit higher than other EasyCaps I've seen, but compared to the $50-$70 Pinnacle Dazzle USB recorder, I did not mind asking for it.
However, I spent much more time trying to get this to work than I wanted.
Clearly the Mac support is a secondary function to Windows support. It comes with readmes and digital manuals for the Ulead Movie Recorder program that it comes with, which only works for windows, but gives very little support for the VideoGlide application that is for the Mac side. This is far from a plug and play device.
MAC PROBLEMS.
It comes with the program VideoGlide (I suggest you download a more recent one from EchoFX's website), and while it seems that's only a demo and you have to pay for it, they provide you a serial number in the CD, in the same folder where the VideoGlide intalation file is O_o (it's like drivers/MacOS/ or something). HOWEVER, after connecting the EasyCap correctly, it tells me there is a problem with my installation and to email the site's customer service. After reinstalling it, and also trying the version that came with the CD, it was still giving me the error. Aftering getting it to work for Windows (see below), I wanted to get it to work for OSX again.
Even after a dozen YouTube videos, the only clue I got was that people were using the demo version of VideoGlide, so I decided to copy that exactly. AND IT WORKED. If you are having this problem, here is what I did:
-DO NOT PLUG THE EASY CAP IN
-Download the most recent VideoGlide software from the website and follow all the installation prompts (including restarting)
-Start VideoGlide up in the DEMO VERSION. Then restart it (I do not know if this step is redudant or not, but try it anyway)
-Make sure your EasyCap is plugged into the video source and the source is on. NOW plug it into the USB port.
-Start VideoGlide up again in the demo version. Under "digitizers" select "VideoGlide". Your video should be working. if not, use the uninstaller to get rid of the VideoGlide components, BUT ALSO manually delete the videoglider and preference files. It tells you that these files are NOT going to be deleted and that you can do it manually. It gives you the location as well.
-Quit VideoGlide, and with the USB still connected, start VideoGlide up again and this time enter the serial number that you can find if you browse the CD, called sn.txt.
WINDOWS PROBLEMS
I am running Windows XP SP3 via bootcamp, and when it attempts to install the drivers, it stops and says I needed SP2...Remember at this point I had not gotten it to work for OSX, so it was almost a paperweight at this point. Instead, when Windows ask you if you want it to automatically find drivers for the device, say yes, and it will download the 350 AV grabber or whatever driver, which will let it work with the Ulead Video Software it comes with.
VIDEO QUALITY
When it comes to quality, it gets the job done, but even that I had to go on YouTube to find how to get the best quality. It records in Standard Definition and my video came out rather interlaced. And remember, IF YOU ARE RECORDING VIDEO GAME FOOTAGE, THERE IS GOING TO BE LAG. I suggest using two RCA cables and 3 female Y female splitters (like $4 each from radio shack, but much much cheaper online) so you can view the game on the Television (no lag) AND on the capture software on your computer screen (With lag). Look up YouTube videos to get the best quality (like getting it to be HD on YouTube)
Sound quality at first is completely unusable, and they provide no documentation on how to fix it (for OSX at least, I admit I only skimmed the Windows the Ulead windows manual). To correct this, go into the device manager in windows and under sound devices, you should see USB audio or unknown USB audio device. Just have windows update the driver and it should work if the sound is set to 224 kbps and the sample rate at 48khz. For OSX, remember to change the sound sampling quality from 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz.
The good thing is that once you get it recording, it offers different conversion formats/codecs (assuming you have the codecs installed), so it will automatically record in the those codecs if you are trying to save space. For me, I record in a h.264 quicktime codec instead of uncompressed because it yields similar quality while taking up less space.
Looking back, I would have looked at more USB video capture devices to see if they work for Mac, since this one took too much trial and error to get to work PROPERLY. Once it did, I was happy with it and began recording many videos. The good thing is, it says it works for Mac, which is great given the lack of products that work on Mac as opposed to a PC. Even though it was hassle, it still DID end up working on my Mac.

A bit stressful to install, but it works like it should, October 8, 2009
This review is from: EasyCap DC60++ Audio/Video Capture -Supports Mac & Vista64 (Electronics)
I bought this version because I have a Vista 64-bit OS, which it's supposed to support. It took quite a bit of work to get past the drivers and such, but if you can claw through all of that, the product will work well. The positive aspects: it does everything a capture device should, and it comes with editing software. It uses a USB port, which means no messy cords or tedious work to hook it up. Anything that uses standard A/V connectors can be recorded and stored on your computer. There's no lengthy file conversion/compression process and screen delay is minimal.
There are a few little things that could be different, however. I said it doesn't convert or compress the captured files, but that's because it stores it in AVI format. The problem is the size of these kinds of videos can get up to 2 GB for a 3 minute recording. It's not a huge deal, it just means you have to convert or compress them yourself to get standard file sizes. The second thing is the resolution, a common gripe among video editors. It's not horrible, but it won't really get past 640 x 480. If you want crisp, high quality picture, you may want to look elsewhere. The last minor detail is I haven't figured out a way to hear the audio as it's being recorded. Like the resolution, it's not a big downside, but it would be nice to have it.
All things considered, this really isn't the best choice for people that want to make top-notch videos, but if you're not a serious editor and just want to make a few quick videos for fun on a budget, this will do the job.

Plug and Pain., December 12, 2009
This review is from: EasyCap DC60++ Audio/Video Capture -Supports Mac & Vista64 (Electronics)
This item is similar to Daystar's XLR8. While XLR8 works flawlessly, Easycap is nothing but disappointment. So far, it is simply a paperweight. The software include will not properly install on either Windows XP or on a Mac. With windows, the install is interrupted with a message stating SP2 needs to be installed. This is nonsense since SP3 is already installed!
The Mac software included is out of date if you have Snow Leopard. You can download a more recent version, but that doesn't matter because once it is installed, it asks for a serial number when first launched. However, the product does not have a serial number anywhere to be found. So, this was a waste of money. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS POS. No wonder this one was so much cheaper (and useless)!
